John Day

I recently fished the John Day River. After the trip, I wrote a blog because I truly think it's one of the best places in the Pacific Northwest to introduce kids to fly fishing.

I spent most of the trip throwing size 6 crawfish patterns, but honestly, just about anything would have worked! I dont know how many fish I caught but it was a ton. Most of them were small and after about an hour I downsized to a 10ft 4wt which was a blast.

Poppers and a 3 wt are super fun on the John Day.

My daughter's kind of generally luke warm on fly fishing, but is always asking when we're going to the JD. Though maybe that's for the milkshakes at the Dinty Mart on the way home....

Even better and the Milkshakes is a fantastic touch! Next time I will definitely bring poppers I have camping reservations in a couple weeks and will be back out there with the little man on my back!
 
Love it! As a kid growing up in SW Montana, we didn't have a John Day & Smallmouth. Our addicting fly-fishing intro was Beaver ponds & Brookies.
