I’ve been anxiously awaiting the thawing of my local lakes hoping to finally get back to some stillwater action. Went out last week one afternoon on a day that wasn’t too cold to check out my favorite C&R hike in spot and the P&T lake where the parking area is. Much to my delight as I pulled in, I could see that the P&T lake was completely ice free. I had brought a rod but haven’t taken the boats out of the basement yet. I walked around to a cove that I had done well in before and started casting. I got into a few nice cutties, but no tigers. Game and Fish have been stocking tigers here for a couple years now and I’m hoping it should produce some nice ones soon. After a bit I hiked over to see if the C&R lake had thawed. Again I was treated to beautiful ice free water. I went home and pulled the Cruzer out of the basement, got it prepped and loaded in the back of the truck, hoping to fish the next morning.
Woke up to 2-3 inches of new snow and howling winds! It stayed windy for the next several days with temps near freezing. Finally by Monday the snow had melted and the wind wasn’t supposed to be to bad. I got a late start so I figured I would check my close C&R lake first before taking the drive to the hike in. Again I was treated to ice free water and put in around 11am. The water was cold and the fishing was a bit slow, but still productive. After two hours my feet and fingers were numb and the wind had started up again, so I headed home. I missed a few takes initially as they were very soft, unusual for this lake this time of year. Got two decent bows to the net and a really nice tiger. When I got home, I just left all the gear in my truck as I planned on fishing again soon, unfortunately it snowed again the next day, with wind and freezing temps. Talk about a teaser!
It is supposed to get warm next week, so maybe it will hold…..
