Is my thought process off (Jurassic Lake)?

First off if somebody offered me a free trip to Jurassic Lake I’d go in a heartbeat.

With that being said…
Jurassic Lake doesn’t overly excite me. It almost appears too easy (minus the 100 mph winds). I think most diehard lake guys like the challenge of figuring things out and the mystery of what you can’t see. Casting into huge pods of 10-20 pound fish day after day doesn’t seem very challenging.

Edit. I just reread what I wrote and have come to the conclusion my thought process is off. Who wouldn’t want to cast into pods of 10-20 pound rainbows…;)!

I'm sure it's an awesome place. However, I am poor. I don't get to take many big trips. I have been to BC steelhead fishing and both times the rivers blew out on us. Couple that with a lifetime of salmon and steelhead fishing in cold or windy or in some other adverse conditions.. I am absolutely sick of it.. I will still do it a little if the fishing is good.
If I am going to spend and money to go fishing "overseas" I'm going somewhere warm and calm.

Ya, you're definitely off ;)

Every time I read or watch a video about that place one thing that seems a constant is people talk about fishing mornings and evenings with long breaks at the lodge in between to eat, smoke cigars, sip scotch, socialize etc. Yeah.....no thanks. If I spend that much money and travel that far I have NO interest in any of that other crap. I want to fish every waking moment and then some.

I agree. Kick the float tube off at midnight and see what really swims in the lake😀

Yeah there's something wrong with you. You should head out my way. I could take you out for some really shitty steelhead fishing in brutal conditions. You'll love it. We will fish hard all day and not catch a thing. It will be awesome.

Could you imagine me just sitting back and sipping Scotch? You and I would likely kill ourselves fishing!

Well I have fished Jurassic and it is special. But don't fool yourself. They aren't stupid fish. You still need to make a decent presentation and entice the eat. Now if you want to rack up pure numbers then go in the early season and you can easily do so. Want it tougher but dime bright rainbows that behave more like steelhead then go in late March or April. Much tougher but to some more rewarding fishing.

I have been lucky enough to go there 3 times some days it is stupid easy and you fish almost all day the next 4 days the wind and snow /hale /sleet will make it almost impossible to cast 15 ft ,I have had wave break over my shoulder when standing in knee deep water I am 6 ft tall you can not escape the weather no trees for cover it is truly a special place it will make you a better fisher person I think of it often probably won’t go back but you never know,it is the only place on earth that I have seen the rocks polished to a very bright shine from the wind. I recommend you go there as a add on to a trip for sea run browns also a little windy .

Agree 1000%

That's exactly how I did it. A week at the Rio Grande (Kau Tapen) then a half week at Jurassic. Best trip of all the ones I have been blessed to go on.

I’ve taken two trips fishing lodges in my life (same lodge actually). It’s a fairly pricey trip and the only reason I do it is because they’ll fly my wife over to Brooks Camp to photograph bears all day while I stay back and fish. Both trips I have been surprised at the number of guests who fish shortened days or don’t fish at all some days. The guide days can start as early as 7 am on the water and end around 4. I am always wondering why we cannot be out by 5 am at least, fish straight through “happy hour” and dinner and stay out until dark. Also, motor back to the lodge for lunch? No need for that! Many days I would DIY it after my guide day through happy hour and then DIY it after dinner as well, effectively taking myself out of the socializing aspect of lodge trips. Not that I am anti social, it’s just that I am paying a decent amount of scratch to be there and I want to spend as much time fishing as possible. I have little interest engaging in small talk over scotch at the lodge. Happy to do so out in the water though. Don’t get me wrong, I have met some great people on those trips but that’s not why I am there. I think that is why some are though. My wife and I do well and I am appreciative I can responsibly afford trips like that but for us, I would consider it a bit of a luxury. For a number of the folks I have met at that lodge, I don’t think it is. I’ve met more than a few very highly compensated folks on those trips (a lot of that small talk in the lodge is not fishing related, it’s a lot of “shop” talk) so for them, It’s just your everyday ho him trip. A number I have met do not fish (fly or conventional) regularly and are there for that AK lodge experience from what I have been able to gather. They tend to get their fill of fishing pretty quickly.

I would like to go there some day, but I agree, it does appear to be a little one dimensional. I will probably continue to favor tropical locations for most of my destination fishing. There is usually a lot more variety of species, and the weather is typically hot with a nice breeze.

Big fish are great, whether it’s Jurassic Lake or Tierra de Fuego, but when the cost of the lodge is ca. 1 K per day on top of the travel, it’s out of my price range and probably that of most on this forum. However, I have done DIY Patagonia fishing trips several times now where the in-country costs for 2 weeks is equivalent to one day at one of those lodges and had great fishing PLUS a cultural experience you’ll never get staying at an expensive lodge with a bunch of well-heeled foreigners.
