Introducing MyFlyVise.com - BETA Phase

Very cool. I poked around a bit and will add a fly or 2 tomorrow. One filter that might be interesting is the type of food source being imitated - a subcatagory of fly type. Saltwater/crab or coldwater/egg instead of mixing water types and food categories in the fly type filter.
definitely something to consider. I'll see about trying that out here in a future update.

So I have the whole "post fly to both sites from a forum post" feature fully working. It's pretty awesome. The hardest part is getting a workable button for the toolbar here. Something I expected to be dead simple is actually way harder than the whole rest of the thing put together.

Alright guys... let's do it. Click that gray fly square button on the right hand side of your "Post reply" toolbar. (your account will need to be linked to make it work)

The MFV fly "cards" that show up here in the forum: I plan to build those out a bit more so they display a lot more info and look much nicer. That'll be in the coming days.

I created a What's in my Vise post, clicked the gray button, entered in all the info about my fly, confirmed it is my fly/photo, and clicked "submit." I get a message stating "Failed to save. Please try again."

And that's why it's a testing phase 😂

My tests all went through today so it works. Just need to find out what made yours fail so will check tomorrow or later tonight.

When I get home I'll check error logs.

Testing form my phone

(these will resize automatically in the next update)
Seems a little droopy.

"Swing"

Fun fact, that fly's cousin caught a D redside this last winter.

I got this when I clicked the gray fly button. I did add a fly on the other site though, and liked it!

Also, @Evan B, I had a couple questions:

I like that many materials are already listed, and I am guessing we just add size and colors in the description? Or should we add another "material" when it comes to size and color?

Examples:

I added as a Hook: Tiemco TMC 100BL, but I did not add a size. The fly I posted you coukd probably do in sizes 12 - 18. Should I add each size to that hook style, or just list that in the description or tying notes?

I added for the body: Holographic Tinsel. But it's Holographic Tinsel in Blue, and size medium. Same question as above, do I add that as a separate material?

Not sure how deep you want to go with your material options, and if you want people adding tons of random stuff, so was curious how you wanted us to proceed with that.

Lastly, and this might just be my preference, but instead of it displaying like a forum (with the most recent fly posted at the top, and then the 2nd most recent below that, and so on), I think it would be cool to have them split into categories. For example Trout Flies, Bass Flies, saltwater flies, etc. And then when you click on that (trout for example) you have more categories: dry flies, nymphs, euro nymphs, wet flies, etc. The user that posts could categorize the fly so you don't have to add it manually.

Not a huge deal, just thought I would throw it out there. Thanks for your work in setting this up, should be fun!

Oh, and I did mean to ask (I am guessing this has to do with host server size?). I have a lot of video shorts I do on tying my patterns. I can't post them here, and doesn't look like there is any way to post them on MyFlyVise.

I'd love to share them with everyone, any possibility of that in the future?

For users experiencing the gray fly forum button issue- I need to look into this. I've not been able to duplicate the issue even with my test, non-admin acct. So need to figure out what is different with your guys setups.

As for hooks and materials - there really isn't a "best way" and leaning one way or another is too restrictive, so it's really up to the user. If you want to include colors on the materials, add them in and they'll be there next time you post something with the same material/color. As for hooks, I really do think best practice is to just put the hook model and put the size in variant, or just put in the description what the most common sizes are. But really, it's up to you. There's no real downside to more information.

For the last part as far as the chronological feed - you already can do that in a kind of way by catering your feed. The left hand side has toggles to only view species you want to see - use the edit button and toggle it on when you want to view that way. I DO plan to do a more separated feed of some sort here that segments them - but there's too many species and fly types to do it by default, it needs to be a user-curated list if that makes sense. So for right now, it'll only filter the feed to what you want to see, but keep it in the chronological feed. Eventually we can separate them out when you toggle that on.

Hope that makes sense.

Not opposed to hosting video down the road. Need to see how the dust settles here with everything in the early stages before we go that far though.

Thanks Evan! Just clicked the fly button again to double check, and now it is working fine 🤷‍♂️

When you use the gray fly button to post to both sites, it will generate a code like in this screenshot. That's what makes your fly card. Just submit exactly what it pastes there for you and post it. Don't have to do anything else.

I was pushing some updates to it and there were a few minutes where it was unhooked. You probably timed it right in that window.

Try again. Let's see if the matter has been resolved

I added one as well. Did not try and use the functionality to push it from PWFF because I may have posted it in this thread before and the stuff I am tying now (olive buggers for lake fishing) is not super exciting.

One suggestion. Is it possible to allow URL’s to be posted in the tying description. I wanted to point those interested to a YouTube video of the fly that inspired the one I posted but got the message url’s are not allowed.

Also here's what I was talking about with editing your custom feed. Any further sectioning like you were talking about is going to be difficult since flies can be attributed to multiple species.

I can come up with a solution for allowing that.
