I would hope I had the generosity and wherewithal all to cover the bill after the card declined and the person was in an obvious state of distress. Getting old can be pretty hard...
3 customers dug out cash ahead of us on a Thanksgiving morning about 7 years ago. The woman in this situation was a little older than I now. To be honest that kind of stuff could start happening to me any day now. jeanne and I sometimes joke about our combined memory loss.
 
I love illusions! Maybe we should have a separate thread for illusions, there are a lot of good ones out there. Here is one of my favorites (also, the Massimo guy who posted this posts awesome science and nature stuff on Twitter):


In addition to illusions, I am fascinated by visual cognition glitches, like inattentional blindness (we see what we are looking for and are blind to 'irrelevant' things) and change blindness (we are blind to gradual changes). More about these here: https://www.simonslab.com/

I think these glitches are features, not bugs, of our brains. We evolved to pay attention to things that matter, like fleeing prey and leaping predators. We cannot pay attention to everything all the time, so our brains disregard lots of things (and make up a lot of the rest).
