How many rods have you broken?

Eight is the number that comes to mind. Over the past 50 or so years. Three were breaks about an inch or so below the tip top, so those rods were repaired and continue to fish a tad shorter than they were originally. Two were the CND Custom that Doublespey referenced earlier. Truly a nice casting rod, but there was some design flaw in the mid section that just suddenly blew up. Two were Hardy 10 1/2' 8 wts that I think also had a design flaw where the butt section just snapped during ordinary casting. And one was my old S.A. fiberglass system 6 trout rod. It was in a plastic rod case when someone threw another duffle bag on it while loading a small ferry boat. Fortunately my partner had a "loaner" rod I was able to use on that trip. Looks like 4 of the 8 were user error, while the remaining 4 were the result of a design or manufacturing flaw.
I am not really counting two (or three?) rods that are missing about an inch or so from the tip, if the tip top fit the broken end, game on. Almost original (almost).

A couple broken tips ,all I can say is being stupid . My favorite rod a Sage XP 6 weight a two piece , far from the original . First time broken tip ,off to Sage for a new tip , second time set my pontoon battery on it ,ya stupid , off to Sage for repair . It was broke in half in the top section . Third time not sure what happened, it broke a few threads in the reel seat , off to Sage for a new butt section . Totally a different rod than the original . My latest stupid move fly stuck in a branch unreachable, ya instead of pulling straight back to break it off ,no I had to get it real tight , then stick my hand up on the first section ,and lift up ,they snap so nice in the butt section that way . It's a Sage VXP , it's been received by Sage , according to them probably unfixable , no parts . Most likely get a new Sonic .

First broken rod was a 7-1/2’ bamboo of unknown origin. Fishing an overgrown creek and broke the tip section against a branch on a hook set. Didn’t learn my lesson as I broke it twice more doing the same thing. It was probably about 6’ when I graduated to a white Shakespeare rod. The one that looked like a CB radio antenna. It broke when my brother dropped an oar on it against the gunnel of a boat. #3 was a Loomis that I snapped the butt section trying to yard a coho out of a kelp ball. Next was a Lamiglass that broke when I tried to stop a Vedder river while king from going down stream thru a rock garden. I got it repaired and the next year it was broken by a buddy who threw his pack onto it in the van. Last (so far) was a Loomis gear rod that I broke a foot off the tip because I had a braid tip wrap.

That I remember…

2 Winston rods (currently have one with a broken tip that needs to be sent back to Winston)
1 G Loomis rods
4 Orvis rods
1 Echo rod
2 Thomas and Thomas rods
1 Sage rod
6 Scott Rods

Most breaks were my either my fault (closed the garage door on a rod, snapping the tip while walking through the woods, hitting a rod with a streamer, etc…) and only a couple breaks from fish (a chum salmon broke my 3wt T&T rod).

Had a 10’4wt Scott Radian that would break if you gave it a dirty look. I actually bought a second one when the original one was in repair… It broke too, and I got frustrated with having to deal with Scott and sold both 10’ 4wts and all my other Scott rods.

Also got a nasty bruise throwing streamers in the wind… but fortunately didn’t hit the rod 😂

Orvis power matrix 3– my first rod, I fished it a lot and broke it 2 or 3 times before Orvis replaced it with a Trident. The PM3 had a nest action but was “brittle.”
St Croix 6 wt—left on truck in sections after finishing a float in the dark and not having my rod case at the take out. We pulled off and it fell on the road and another car ran over the butt section.
Sage 10 wt—deckhand put it together. I was casting and the middle ferrrule slipped, crack. Nobody else needs to assemble my rods.
Sage 12 wt- casting from the bow of a tuna boat, middle ferrule slipped and crack. I need to make sure the ferrules are tight.
CT 2 wt- was assembled in the car, going fishing, rod tip went out an open back window and I power rolled the window up as I hit the freeway, snap.
TFO 6 weight—tiller handle on motor shifted during boat retrieval, rod still in boat, crack
TFO 8 wt—thought the rod bag was empty but the tip section was still in it and I did something dumb to break it.
TFO 8 wt—snake guide half ripped off bushwhacking
Cabelas 12 wt—rushed a tuna to the gaff, wrong lifting technique

So maybe not a dozen, but 11 separate incidents.
Cuidado, amigos.
Such details! Do you keep a log for this? :)

CastsN2trees not CastsN2arm; OUCH

Many.

Sage Launch 6wt, my first real fly rod. Rolled up the rental car window with tip sticking out.

Sage Method 8wt - if blew up casting.

Scott Radian 5wt - broke the tip pushing at a stuck fly in the branch. Second time I had it laying in my minivan and the boy jumped in before I had the chance to take it out.

Scott Centric 7wt, two of them on the same morning. First one blew up at mid section when I went to cast. Second was resting and slid under the bow cleat on @jasmillo Whaler, humpy fever and lack of sleep caused me to grab it for a quick cast before clearing the cleat. Crack!

Scott Meridian 10wt - bad angle while fighting an albacore under the boat.

Scott Centric 7wt again, had it laying in my 4Runner - nephew dropped his heavy pack on it.

I’ve broken several in many different ways. Some were definitely my fault and others probably were due to defects in materials and workmanship. One of my partners thinks two piece rods were more durable and I think that he’s partly right. I believe that the move towards lighter thin walled designs is largely to blame. I haven’t ever broken a fiberglass rod. I absolutely destroyed a friend’s telescoping rod playing a bass, and I’ve even broken the lower sections of spey rods while casting, in spite of not overloading the rod. I have also been amazed that t have not broken some thin walled four piece rods when fish have gone under the boat and bent the rod double.

Seems like I'm in the average. Has anyone had a new rod blow up in the first couple times of using it? Just wondering how common that is.
Only rod I had fail during initial use was a brand new 5 wt Sage X. Reel seat butt fell off because they only used a tiny blob of glue to attach it to the rosewood shaft...resulting in the flyreel going to the bottom of the lake. Not impressed with Sage's response or their rod build quality.

BTW: I've read of others having the same issue on other FF forums.

One….. an old Marryat when they were built on sage blanks. Talking 25+ years ago. 690-3 purchased at Swedes in woodinville on close out. About a year later casting and just hear a weird sound and odd rod vibration felt. Took it to avid angler and they gave me usa contact rep name and number. Called him. Met him on the Eastside/redmond area at a some warehouse building. He looks at it… took my rod and gave me a brand new rod same make and model. Which I believe Big Tuna ended up getting later. It was a nice casting rod and definitely eye candy rod too. I don’t like three piece rods.

Luckily I have not broken a Spey rod but that’s the one rod I have seen break a lot. I think I have been around fishing partners or acquaintances and seen at least 5 Spey rods break on the water. Couple from fighting fish and others just from the cast. Ouch!!!

Three. One in a van door, one in a tailgate, one foul hooking a chum.

Only one in over 50 years of fishing. A Sage LL 4711 tip carelessly putting it in the truck when it caught on the headliner trim. It was already an old rod and Sage replaced the tip section but said it was one of the last ones they had.

I’m pretty easy on my rods. I usually break my guides rods, he doesn’t let me fish nice rods anymore.

I'm up to four, five, I think. Broke my Sage opening day 4/20/91, too drunk to fish. It's fixed and love using it today. Then several in the last couple years. Echo rocks, Orvis is a good repair also. Only one not my fault was an Okuma bobber doggin' rod that broke right off the bat on a cast. They got a good warranty too.

I lied, actually I forgot. I broke the tip top off a Cabela's 8 wt about 20-25 years ago. Caught it on the siding while walking back to the house after yard casting it right after I got it. Was able to replace the tip top and only lost about an inch off the thing. Still 2 rods in a long fishing life ain't too bad.

Two tips and one short insert over the 10 years. Only once it was fish, twice i broke tip due to my error. First time i had beer for lunch and was not drunk but little buzzed. Second was lining rod in the bush, instead by car where i had space and time. I was rushing to go fishing. Since then, I take time to set rod first.

Several years ago I had a Scott that broke in two places which was covered by Scott with a comment that rods usually do not break in two places. About a month after I received the replacement rod the ferrules broke, again covered by Scott. That was the only two breaks I remember. I did have a couple of spinning rods that were broken over the years but that is all I remember

I've broken 5 rods (well, 4 rods, once twice).
  1. tip of my TFO 5wt. Camper door blew shut while I was putting it inside because of weather.
  2. tip of my 7wt Beulah. forgot it was a 10' when sliding it into the rod holder on the boat with a 9'. Pushed too hard.
  3. Thomas & Thomas (used) - broke on the second cast in Baja on the 2nd day of a 2 week sailing trip
  4. Thomas & Thomas (after the repair) - Broke in 2 places while trying to land a 25# chinook. netted it though.
  5. Berkley Ramseys - Friend rowed his drift boat into mine while we were goofing on the Deschutes. The tip of the rod went through the small tie-on hole on the bow of his Willy's and then he tried to row backwards but it was too late. Now its a great twitching rod.
