Bought my wife a newer treadmill and bike for Christmas.
Now she wants a rowing machine.
Being a good husband I said yes dear.

Should I stick with a 16' Clackacraft for the Rockies or get a raft?

Hah, well, if you actually do want a rowing machine, go with the Concept 2 ERG style rower. Then be sure she watches some videos online. I coach at a gym, and 100% of people who come in seem to not know how to use a rower machine properly. Think it's all arm and back and not a mostly leg drive movement.

You can't go wrong with a Concept 2 ERG rower. They are built well and last a very long time. Their website has a lot of training videos as well. I agree with @Evan B that you should take the time to watch them. It will help in the long run.

Being a good wife she probably deserves and would appreciate both.
I have had (and intensively used) rowing machines for over 40 years. Wore some out in a few years. Total body workout.

By far and away the most durable and respected in the industry...even for commercial gyms... are the Concept 2 units. I love mine.

Not cheap but a great machine from a company that stands behind their products.

I would stay away from units from mfg that use pneumatic resistance struts...which fail if used much and the mfg (if they're still around) probably won't be able to provide replacement parts.

Air (used in Concept 2) or water resistance units tend to be the most durable.

The raft will be a tougher workout:ROFLMAO:. You know those things are only effective if you can use them 3-4x's/week. I like your approach!

Probably leave whichever one at the cabin year round.
I like the thought of a glass boat for that reason.

As far as the rower goes I'm considering a nordictrack to match the 40° treadmill. Who knows...I'm definitely more concerned about the outdoor rowing machine.

my son, who is a serious lifter, sweats regularly on his Concept rower and swears by it. On days when I'm not swimming laps, floor exercises/power bands/weights/ and 10 miles on an Armstrong home trainer are the call. Unless it's like yesterday and I have to spend over an hour wrestling a 10hp snow blower to clear an 8" dump of the heaviest, wettest snow possible, starting with the 3' high berm the ASSHOLE snow plow driver clearing our street left blocking our driveway at 4:15 am in the morning.

I vote both as no one vessel serves all needs.

But for indoor practice for outdoor exercise... I am very happy with my water rower. It has performed flawlessly and makes me sweat! And when not in use just stand it in the corner.

Of course, you could just join Planet Fitness for $ 15/mo (they have rowing machines) and spend the money you save on both a drift boat and an Alaskan float trip.
Yeah...but if you use Planet Fitness machines the same way most people do at home...a place to hang clothes...they'll just throw your duds away.

This all makes sense except for the gym membership part.
Why do that when you could increase the value of your house and workout at home.

I put a lot into our home gym. It was the best money I ever spent! It got both my boys to college and has kept my wife and I in shape for almost 10 years now. When the boys are home for breaks there can be as many as 4-5 college athletes working out any given time…puts a smile on my face😀.

I had a really nice home gym set up in my garage for a couple years. Decided we both prefer going to our gym and seeing our friends there. Only home workouts I do now are my runs... Which really only start and end at home.
