Counterpoint:
Nobody has won more games in the regular season than this Bruins team.

Additional counterpoint:

Now, sure. That's not the Bruins themselves sending those tweets. But they are happy to take those fans money.

The dirty play, the players (remember Mitchell Miller?), the racist fans, and so on, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. You won't see me cheering for the Bruins.

To be very clear, more power to anyone who wants to cheer for any team. I have no issue with that at all. I don't define myself by who I cheer for and I don't define others by who they cheer for.

Sports to me is just a fun distraction from life. A long running unscripted soap opera I can follow. I don't "hate" the Bruins or the Cowboys or the Yankees even remotely the same way that I hate cancer or children going hungry or even something like the snake river dams. It's just play hate. A chance to say "Grrr!" and shake my fist over something that has little meaning in the real world.

Brad is a dirty jerk of a player.

Hockey can bring out he best and worst in people. Off the ice, Marchand is a remarkably thoughtful and kind man. He is the sort of cat that I would want my kids to be around. On the ice, he has crossed the line on more that 1 occasion. He is the sort of cat that may hurt you kid with a bad play. He is also exceptionally skilled.

Hockey fans behavior can be just as dichotomous. Like groups everywhere, they are not monolithic just because they share one thing. I don't know as it's fair to judge an entire fan base or franchise for what a group of fans say on Twitter in 2013. Make no mistake, there are racist Bruin fans. I know some. I don't speak with them, but I know them. The one exception to this is clearly Flyers fans. Flyers fans are not completely monolithic but they do share all of the same negative traits.

There are also racist Kraken fans and Avalanche fans etc. I don't know any personally, but I don't really know many Kraken or Ave fans.

Subban has had his share of racist taunts thrown his way and then some. His brother recently has had to deal with an on the ice incident. There was a lot of thought that the Canadians traded him for an older white defenseman (Shea Webber) because they did not want the face of their franchise to be a black man. Subban was one hell of a player and an excellent member of every community he has been in. He has always dealt with the racists with an amount of class and dignity that exposes them for what they are. He should be commended for the way that he has lived his life in the public eye.

Kraken first playoff game ever!
Chear your team. Nothing better in the sports world than having a team in the Stanly cup playoffs. It is the best.

I think this is true of sports in general. Guys like Marchand, Richard Sherman, Draymond Green, etc are all guys you love on your own team and despise on someone else's. Some of those dudes are terrible humans in real life (Sherman seems to have issues), but many are probably just regular guys when they aren't playing.

I should have been less bombastic in my shit talking. I absolutely did not mean to imply that all bruins/boston fans are racist. Racists like the people who make the news over sports are are, thankfully, just a loud minority. So my apologies to anyone who felt like I was being a dick there.

I'm sure this is true. Racists are sadly, everywhere. From what I can tell, european soccer has a FAR worse issue with sports fan racism than we do in the USA. To the point that some teams end up playing games in empty stadiums as a penalty. Serie A in Italy is just infested with it and it's made the news multiple times just this year.

That said, we have to acknowledge that Boston has a reputation and a history around sports racism that isn't shared by somewhere like Seattle and most other cities. Nobody writing "most racist sports city" articles about Kansas City. How many LA hall of famers are calling that city the "flea market of racism" like Bill Russell did Boston?

Now, does that have more to do with the history of our country and black diaspora and the fact that Boston has had pro sports for far FAR longer than somewhere like Seattle (and through some very rough years as far as race relations)? If the Mariners had 100 years of history or if the USA was settled west to east, would we have the same type of stories here? And on the other side, nobody in Seattle will ever have the chance to make history like Red Auerbach did. Bill Russell may have experienced racism in Boston. But what would his career have been without the "play the best man regardless of race" mindset of Auerbach in a time when that wasn't common? These are all interesting conversations, but I'm not a smart or knowledgeable enough person to know the answers.

Mostly, I follow sports for the community and connection with other humans over something that allows me to escape the culture battles of the real world. Which is perhaps funny in a way because sports really does have much to do with our society's growth and evolution through the years. As Charles said, sports can really bring out the best and worst of humans all at the same time.

Playoff hockey is outstanding. I'd argue that it's the sport with the biggest intensity change between the regular season and postseason (right up there with college basketball, though much of that is the March Madness format).

I'm amped up for the Bruins.
But the path is long.

Its pretty funny to isolate one player as being dirty. There is uncalled dirty tactics throughout games in general. Marchand is small in stature, its a wonder he hasn't been crushed into retirement. I admire his tenacity.
