Anybody else come upon some crazy stuff when out exploring?.....be it mushrooming, checking out new waters, hiking, or whatever? Yesterday I ventured upriver to a stretch that doesn't see much foot traffic cuz it's kind of a PIA to reach. It's become one of my go to places when I'm up for some bushwhacking & alone time and yesterday was my first visit this season.

Over the last several years, some one or some group has been scrapping together a living area in a root ball at the edge of the river. At first I thought it was some local kids with their secret club house but it's becoming pretty elaborate.

Here are a couple screen shots from last year...

...as you can see, it's a wee bit more than some middle schoolers with a 'He-Man Woman Hater's' club.....a well thought out fireplace/woodstove, seating, and space to lay down.

Last year there was an old school Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn type raft at the water's edge. This year there's a hollowed out log with an outrigger....

and the upgrades to the hut are pretty cool, too.

and I'm not sure if this is the summer home or if it's a small 'community' cuz about 100 yards away in the woods is this...

I didn't get too close to this one cuz it kinda gave me the creeps....didn't want a Deliverance or Hansel & Gretel type experience.

I've been up there maybe a dozen times and never seen a person. Sheese, maybe it's the first known evidence of Bigfoot.🤪

Anyone else find crazy stuff....like maybe a mini Area 51 ?

How did the canoe handle the rapids back down?

I found a fake booby trap at a walk-in camp site once. Someone tied some paracord to a bent-over tree and connected it to a fake hand grenade on the ground and neatly coiled the extra paracord next to the grenade. It looked super fake but I still “disarmed it” with a 20’ stick from behind a tree…just in case.

I was up on a remote tributary of Harrison Lake BC this past week, and found a roughly built lean to shack by the river, sitting on the bluff above a nice pool. Made of logs, with all the cracks stuffed with moss, and had a bark roof. I chuckled when I saw the "Love Shack" sign above the door, and "spank me harder daddy" sign inside. Canadian ladies are different I suppose.

Sorry, no pics, didn't have my phone.

Lol. I suspect that no ladies of any kind have ever graced that shack. You might want to adjust the characters in your mental picture!

I mean there’s ladies and there’s “ladies.”

Long ago, I was doing some very remote desert four wheeling east of Mono Lake CA. I came across a "dug out". Some timber was used, and a stove pipe was attached to a stone hearth. The ceiling was about 4 ft high and the dirt "shelves" still had some can goods that looked very, very old. Outside the dug out was a display of about ten, intricately made, "dream catchers" made of old rusted wire, broken glass, antique bottles, bones and rocks. A surreal scene with the warm desert wind. I guessed that a Native American was using it as a hunting cabin back before the 1950's. I'd like to believe that this place has not been disturbed..I left it as I found it.

A couple of years ago, while mushroom hunting north of the Skagit River, I parked my truck, hiked into the forest (no trail) and soon found a Mexican blanket with bones sticking out of it. This was disturbing. Thankfully, I found a deer jaw nearby... And I think maybe it was just a roadkill wrapped up in a blanket and set to rest in the backcountry.....but it sure did give me the heeby jeebies for a few minutes.

There used to be a great 1 on the Sky by Wallace Flats in the early 2000s. It had a couch made frome carpet laid across 2 logs, it was so fucking comfortable, I may or may not have taken a nap or 2 on it! :p

Not structure related but weird…

There is a place on the coast that I used to mushroom hunt frequently until the land was bought up and became private property. One day I was in there mushroom hunting and as one does, I was scanning the ground, looking more down than up. I was slowly moving along, scanning the ground. I lifted my head and was face to face with a freshly severed deer head staring at me, hanging from a tree, antlers still attached, eyes still open. Obviously a poaching job given the location. Not the vibe I am looking for when trying to enjoy some nature and I was not to keen on running into the perp while alone in the woods with nothing more than a pocket knife on me.

In the same spot a year or two later I found a set metal foot trap, big enough for a bear I’d presume. It was chained to a tree and I missed it by a footstep or so. I carefully flipped it upside down with a stick but was nervous to try to trigger it closed. It was pretty rusty so I’m not sure it even worked but I didn’t want to find out the hard way. I’m almost glad I can no longer access that chunk of land. Great spot for mushrooms but there was just too much bad energy going on back there.
