Happy 4th of July!

I wrote and recorded this three years ago today when I was sick with covid and RvW had just been overturned. I thought things couldn't get much worse. Boy was I wrong.

I spent some time at sea, away from all the world
Looking out for whales or bears or possibly a girl
The nature and the sunshine and the fresh air was my thrill
A tiny slice of normal last two years were just a drill

But when I got home I felt more than just a sneeze
Tested inspected and failed every one of three
Instead of seeing my friends I sat in quarantine
Hangin’ out on Independence Day
By myself on Independence Day

I saw them on the news, and wonder what they mean
They say that they’re pro-life, but also pro AR-15
And they gut the EPA that keeps our air and water clean
While they suppress voter’s rights with some gerrymandering

No one’s perfect but for now I can report
The biggest “fuckshow” rests within the Supreme Court
Lifetime appointment? It’s them we should abort
Ditch the clowns on Independence Day
Burn it down on Independence Day

I try not to be bummed but it’s a real tough pill to swallow
When I think about my friends’ kids and the earth and tomorrow
Let’s use it all up now until there’s nothing left to borrow
All that patriotic bullshit just continues to ring hollow

And now we’ve got ourselves a great catastrophe
We’ve turned the clock right back to 1933
And suddenly we are not feeling very free
But for now it’s Independence Day
Party down on Independence Day

For what

Happy 4th everyone. Had our usual friends over for a potluck BBQ. So good.

Been doing it with them for 25 years. Families grew up before our eyes. So many lifelong memories.

This year was only for the older adults. A first! So relaxing.

So quiet without any fireworks. Well some off on the distance. I will change that next year. U.S. 250th birthday.

We went along with our SIL to his aunt and uncle's place on a small bay out of Gig Harbor near Fox Island. They are really into 4th of July, as are many of the residents on this bay. It was constant fireworks noise from the time we arrived around 4:00 PM. And through a BBQ dinner and approaching evening. Some of the larger displays began nearly an hour before dusk. And as it got dark, the area lit up and smelled like a battlefield. My grandson and his cousin were having the time of their lives. The uncle's neighbor asked if he could use his floating dock again this year to set up his "display." Two small boatloads of boxes later, the small floating dock was completely covered with fireworks. My SIL said that each box contained about $250 work of fireworks. I estimated 48 boxes. Did I mention these folks are really into July 4th fireworks? And a dock two door down has just as many. And considering the values of these waterfront homes, I guess they can well afford it. I can't relate. The firework explosions went on, and on, and on . . . Just when I thought there couldn't possibly be any more, it was like starting all over again. Not that it wasn't impressive; it was! Like professional scale fireworks non-stop until 10:45, when it finally slowed down. The night air was blue with smoke. The uncle's dock caught fire twice - I guess this was expected as it happened last year as well. The small boat was equipped with a bucket for this purpose. If I hadn't seen this, I wouldn't believe it. I had another drink.

Now I remember why we haven't joined this party for nearly 10 years. It was a bit much. They're all really nice people, but I'm just not into that scale and extent of partying.

Why do you hate America Salmo ?
😁🤣🤣🤣🤣😁

I'm a big fan of the structure fires, and like the brush fires also.
There's always a good mix of alcohol and gunpowder out this way, toss in some of the '24 and more' gene pool, add a marked lack of common sense, then sit back and watch the fingers fly !!!

So I got to know our renters last night. The man is a newly minted US citizen from Greece. He was stoked for his first 4th as a citizen. He'd never seen so many fireworks. We had fun, all the neighbor's, way too much food. Good stuff.

"Well, it means exactly what it says, it's a declaration, it's a declaration of unity and love and respect and it means a lot and its something very special to our country"
response last week when asked about the framed document hanging on their office wall

What a tragedy a thread wishing All a happy day celebrating the beginning of our independence has turned to this.
Nice work, gentlemen.

There are lots of things to argue about regarding the 4th.

Fires, noise, smoke, impact on animals, injuries, cost of them, etc. are among them. Politics is not one of them!

The 4th lasts 1 day. We each grin and bear it for things we do not like for one day.

It is a sad day when some can not live without Politics, even for one day. Think of others and the impact on them, regarding Politics.

We all need a break... That is why many of us come here...

John Adams famously was surprised at the adoption of the Fourth as he assumed, and wrote his wife, that the celebration would be:

"The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not."

- John Adams July 3, 1776 in a letter to his wife

He was so pissed about it he never attended an event on the fourth. o_O:LOL:
