Hail Marys sometimes connect...even with capr

I had some time this morning to kill, so what better way to spend it prior to the family waking up than checking out some potential early season carp spots.

1st spot = bust. Too high (and cold). 2nd spot = bust. Also too high (also too cold)....nearly got taken out by several logs.

3rd spot....nearly taken out by a train. But I persevered. Sometimes ya gotta throw that Hail Mary...some dozen fish later....

Nothing huge, but a decent number in the 3-6lb range (most were in that 3-4lb range with one a little larger).

🍻

What weight rod are you using clarkman? Dry line?
I always fish a dry line with my little fly I've been calling a clam eggo, which is basically just a hybrid of the hybrid with an eggstasy egg built in. I've been using my 8' Steffen Brothers 8/9wt glass that I had rolled and built up last year (primarily for carp). These fish would have been fun on on a 6 or 7wt too. (still got a nice bend on this Steffen though).

I like a 6 or 7wt 8' glass rod, always full floater line. I'm running like a 12' leader, so no need for a sinking line when the fish are typically no deeper than 3-4'.

yeah, these woulda been pretty fun on my BAG 7wt setup with the Danielsson Original (no drag).

It is rather adventurous....I do like to dabble. But there's also a reason my primary setup for them is my aforementioned Steffen but also a reel with a solid drag.

No drag with a carp on sounds...well, adventurous. 😁
The very first fish I hooked last year after rigging up my new click-pawl reel was my personal best carp. biggest one I've ever landed. It went on the longest run I've ever had a carp take as soon as I set the hook. Made me immediately regret my choices :ROFLMAO: I stubbornly stuck with it the whole season, but I just plain didn't enjoy it like I thought I would. (and I've caught dozens of steelhead on centerpins, which have like negative drag... I enjoy that for some reason still)

I may end up going the opposite direction... ....may.

at least until I hook a Plus-size....

anyway, even those little peanuts are fun as hell!

Carp or in this case, in the title "capr".. I'm going to spend some time chasing them this year! I've done it a handful of times, but I'll use my 6wt or one of my switch rods and go for it. I will be using drag though! LOL! LFG!

One thing I've noticed about carp and carp fishing is carp anglers. It's as if there's been a new Brad Pitt film based on the 1997 publication of Carp on the Fly. MY local water, once so void of anglers isn't so lonesome anymore. And like a fool, I sold a boat fairly well suited to running MY local waters (in the deluded belief that a boat will get me into newer, less people crowded waters and that I can once again have MY own carp water) and haven't made the commitment to purchase another boat Deluded I say.

This thread has me so conflicted!! It's spring in the Basin, the lakes are in the mid-50's (well, some of them), the chironomids are hatching, the trout are hungry, hot and biting and you guys are causing sleep loss with your carp catching reports! ;-)

I think you need to be heading a bit SE instead of North to find what you are looking for.

Buzzy's driving round to be Billy's moral support and cheer squad, meanwhile he's mourning his boat. How's a man to spend his time? Billy should be driving around and cheering on Buzzy while watching him nail some big-barbelled toads. (And I'm talking carp here not sorta bipedal sorta hominids from Soap Lake.)

Not my turn to cry but my turn to share Billy's excitement. Yesterday morning I was heading down the highway when my phone rang, it's Billy. I answer and hear him going about a 100 mph telling me about this gynormous (my grandson's word) rainbow, the fish almost jumping into his float tube, jumping many times..... Young man was absolutely GIDDY (and it can be contagious!). I ended up hiking across scablands to watch him fish and be close enough to shoot the breeze which made me late in meeting up with @Starman77 . This was perhaps an hour after his GYNORMOUS trout and he was still rockin'! Well done Billy!!
