oldest granddaughter, studying to be an epidemiologist at Oregon State, has a summer research job identifying tick populations in Oregon forests. She places peanut butter in the bottom of 5 gal white buckets by likely tick bush and then flips them upside down on the forest floor and comes back every two weeks to count embedded ticks. Along with the bait they place critter cams to track other wildlife attracted to the bait.

Bright white snowberries are quite visible against the green leaves.

Because the berries are high in saponins (soap-like compounds) they are not commonly eaten. Because saponins can disrupt fish gills and impair oxygen absorption, tribal fishers have added crushed extracts from plants rich in saponins to kill or incapacitate fish in streams or ponds. But this Townsend’s chipmunk was unphased by the saponins and filled its cheek pouches with snowberry fragments.

I used to live about 20 minutes from that refuge and seldom visited it, unless I was launching a boat. I would say I definitely missed out.
