NFR Got any mammal pictures

Non-fishing related
Bats are cool. For a brief second though, I thought, with this in the mammal pic thread, that it was a flying squirrel.

Got me thinking I've never seen one, and wondering if anyone here has (queue the Rocky/Bullwinkle memes).

Anyway, the only person I know that has seen one is my Dad. He said they saw them occasionally in the woods on the farm outside Bellingham. This was also a very long time ago (Great Depression). Just seems like a cool critter.
Not a live one unfortunately. My old neighbor’s feral cat ate one on my back porch in Burien years ago. Left the head and tail behind. I still have the tail. Soft and fluffy like rabbit fur. Apparently they are easy prey at night as they feed at ground level.

It was cool to read up on them at the time. I had no idea that they occupied urban areas.

We used to see them back home on occasion. There was a local resort whose owner would feed them left-over toast with chunky PB on it (hung on a nail in a tree.). After full dark they would glide-in to feed.

My wife and I just returned from a trip to Monterey Bay where we went on a whale watching tour. Over the years, I have seen a lot of cool stuff chasing albacore and participating in the near shore fisheries but this tour packed everything into 4 hours. The weather was perfect (go figure) greasy flat with overcast and a little sun towards the end with a baby wind chop. I don't think anyone on the boat lost their lunch which is surprising. The tour was linked to the Monterey Bay Aquarium live hydrophone located in the Monterey Canyon. We heard clicking sperm whales which may have been the coolest thing of all. The tour was 10 out of 10 and outstanding. Next up for me would be seeing a blue whale which is on my bucket list.

We saw a group of maybe 200 Risso's dolphins - a species I had only seen once before years ago out of Brookings Oregon.

My first ever encounter with northern right whale dolphins - super cool. We also saw 100's of Pacific white-sided dolphins which are so common on the PNW tuna grounds.

We ran into "Louise's pod", a group of 8 transient killer whales - that observation was bucket list for my wife and they gave us quite a show.

Humpbacks are the staple for the whale tours this time of year - they are abundant in Monterey Bay and we saw 4 or 5 while we were out.

My in laws had one they kept as a pet long ago. And the one I remember seeing most clearly, I was also with my FIL, a falconer, during a redtail hawk-driven squirrel hunt.

Flying Squirrels are all over PS, when I worked for a tree service we'd see themvtaking flight all the time from trees being taken down. 1 climber would take babies from the nests afer moma bailed and raise them enough to release.

I'd call that a limit! Rich. Well done! I haven't been over that way in a spell (or anywhere else either lol.).

There is a beaver house nearby that is currently housing four beavers and four minks. That is if the mink don’t actually live in the beaver house they are immediately next door.
This guy swims out 20 yards from shore grabs a crayfish and back to shore in about 20 seconds. He does this around six times in a 10-15 minute period. He’s got mouths to feed!
This whole situation strikes me as exceedingly strange and it all takes place with people and dogs swimming nearby, and kayaks going by.IMG_0531.jpegIMG_0513.jpegIMG_0186.jpegIMG_0516.jpeg

Nicely done, Rich!

I miss seeing 'Lopers. There are some in the Horse Heaven Hills South & West of here, but I only spotted them once Waaay out there.

Just cell phone pictures, but there were hundreds of seals at Pt. Defiance this afternoon. I took a walk from Owen Beach around the point and back at low tide. It was like seal pup preschool, they were practicing their breathing, getting in and out of the water, rolls/flips/turns, playing in the waves. It was really fun to watch.
