Good bird morning here in SWW. One solid new Merlin ID with a band tailed pigeon. And possibly a new raptor. Maaaybe a Cooper's, but the white edge feathers on the tail look weird?

That looks a lot like the late Patrick McManus writing about his "photo of exact spot where a trophy whitetail buck was standing 2 seconds before picture was snapped." When it comes to the "pics or it didn't happen" crowd, my life is pretty much one where nothing ever happened.

Fishless, but nice morning on the crick. One surprise was a small flock of cedar waxwings hanging out on a logjam.



Ran into one other fisherman upstream of me, but he took off before I could ask how the fishing was.

I stumbled upon mama grouse and her baby in the Quinault Rainforest a couple days ago.

I don't know what the brood size normally is, but there was only 1 chick. How incredibly camouflaged they are though.

Thanks. Definitely one of the best dressed PNW birds. I pick them up on Merlin a lot but rarely get more than a glimpse in the trees. Was nice to see them out in the open.

Close encounters with hummingbirds and a chickadee infestation this morning.

What I wish I had is a pic or video of the Cooper's (?) hawk that was in hot pursuit of a robin this morning.

Rain bumped the river nicely so gave it another shot this morning. No gleaming summer unicorns hooked or seen.

Good birding session though.

Cedar waxwings are still hanging out on the logjam.


Started to cross the river and got cussed out by a pair of spotted sandpipers. I sat down for a bit and one came within 10 feet to express it's objection to my presence.



Stepped carefully watching for the sandpiper nest as I started across the river.

Got to the other side and saw momma merganser and brood hightailing it up river. Barely got the phone out to get this shot.
