Got any bird pics?

It may be a juvenile green heron. That is pretty far from cover for a bittern. And juvies have the streaked breast that you can see in your picture (and the greenish-yellow legs).
Steve
Thank you, it could be. I thought the same, and I considered that as I was trying to identify it on Cornell’s website, but I dismissed it being a juvenile Green Heron because it lacked the dark “cap” on the top of the head that they mentioned in the description. I know that there can be regional differences too, part of the fun.

It was a cool bird to see regardless of what it was. I was surprised that it let me get as close as I did, regardless of the poor phone pics.

Did it low-hole you, Brian?

Went back for another chance to shoot the madrone pair, there was only one this weekend

Was taking a tour of Vashon yesterday and didn't realize there is a huge and dense pacific madrone grove just east of ridge road. Probably the densest concentration of those trees I have seen, this was really, really unexpected. Hey, if you know of a dense grove of these trees, would love to know where, feel free to PM me....

Beautiful trees, those Madronas.
There's a very nice grove at Eastsound on Orcas Isle. Not sure about access to walk through and enjoy them though.

I can’t point you at groves of madrone, but I can get you to the largest that I have seen and several copse of madrone in the same area.

Darn it, went to move the garbage cans out and there is a wounded crow laying in the lawn. Can sorta walk but really just tries to hide its face in the grass. It just stands there lays down if i get close.

So I rode for 70 minutes and now it's in the gutter. Can't or won't fly, animal control won't come get it, and they said I can't shoot it. Left a message with a bird of prey guy I think. Don't know what to do.
Edit: can't come and get it because of bird flu. If I caught it ACE would euthanize it. Otherwise it's there till 102 degrees, a car, or dog, cat something gets it. Don't know why this bugs me so much.

This single duck flew in and spent some time on a westside lake at ~3800'. The lake has a shallow weedy shoreline, but it was out in the deep middle section. The profile in flight gave an impression of long body and long, narrow, pointed wings. Pics are heavily cropped, so resolution ain't great. My guess is Northern Shoveler or Teal (Cinnamon or Blue Winged.) What do the experts think?

Doesn't look like a puddle duck; profile suggests some type of hen diver. Long body rules-out Ruddy Duck hen. Possibly a hen Ringnecked Duck?

Wrap up on the crow. After the last post I figured it wasn't right to leave it there scared in the heat by the road so I grabbed a blanket and a box and went out front to get it, and it was gone. Mailman had just seen it kinda leaning against the curb in trouble about 5 minutes before when he drove by. He walked up as I was out looking and he helped me look for it too, and it was nowhere nearby. I don't know, we're both sure it had a broken leg and wing. Just walked the nearby area again, nothing. Weird.

Having looked at the book some more, I'm going with Ringneck for now.

Thank you very much for trying to help the crow Tom! I have a great respect for you, your concern and your effort to help an animal that’s in pain and distress. A few years ago on my way to work during heavy traffic, there was a crow laying on its back kicking its legs in the middle of the road trying to get up and move. I can only assume that it must have been hit by a car. I really, really badly wanted to stop in the middle of the road and hold up traffic to pick up and move the crow knowing that it was going to get run over and killed. I did not stop and it’s something that has really bothered for many years. I will be stopping the next time.
