Funny how drunk rednecks have better taste in music than educated city types..

Yes, I'm saying Def Leppard and Skynard blow U2 COMPLETELY out of the water..

Not a Def Leppard fan but I will admit that Watergate does not bother me.
U2? Ha, really?

U2 is old man music at this point. They literally play it on the classic rock station right before Skynard and right after Def Leppard.

You're like 30 years too late with that "burn".

Sir Paul McCartney was once asked what was his favorite kind of music. He simply said "Good Music". Some of the more famous, classical, melodies, seem to last forever. Moonlight Sonata, Chopin-Nocturne op.9 No.2, etc., Like great films, music that is memorable for a large swath of people is "Good Music".

I think the only music that's objectively terrible is the last decade or so of pop "country." there's other music I dislike, but it's hard to find any redeeming qualities in anything that manufactured and formulaic with lyrics that are basically a mad libs game of every cliche pandering rural life trope.

Hank 111 keeps it real, thoughts on pop country, and kid rock in one song

Meh, I can’t get on board with this.

You're pigeonholing a whole genre into a stereotype. Even if a lot of it fits, there's plenty of radio country that doesn't fall into that bucket. It's lazy work to just lump everything together, even if it's a genre you don't love.

And hell, most music can be painted with that same brush if you want to. I love Frank Sinatra, but the guy has two kinds of songs generally, he's either in love or he's heartbroken. The same can be said for every hair band song and most anything Elvis or Johnny Cash sung. How many popular rap songs are about partying in the club? How many indie rock songs are about being misunderstood by the world? Do punks sing about anything but fighting the system?

Do you skip all of those genres for the same reason?

Well, this isn't an opinion I have enough conviction about to argue too much, but I'll explain a bit more.

Some of my favorite country has been released in the last 10yrs. I feel there's three main categories going right now in that world:

Pop Country - The stuff I described above. The stuff where the performer played little to no part in the creation of the song. They show up to record a few vocal tracks on something someone else created, then are used to market/sell it. It barely resembles anything I would ever categorize as country other than the forced tropey lyrics and vocal styles. I can't stand it and have given it a LOT of chances. It remains just about the only type of music that I will go out of my way to avoid having to hear.

Country - The remaining group of more organic, but still sometimes pop-influenced country. I still don't like most all of it, but it is distinctly different from the above in a number of ways I can't articulate. I may not enjoy it, but I don't have beef with it. I'd call this more the spiritual successors to what Garth Brooks got going a few decades ago.

Americana Country - The more "old school" style. At least to me, it is a lot more honest and authentic (in general). Jason Isbell would be what I'd consider the poster child of this niche.

This post is MUCH better explained than your initial one and shows your thinking on the subject and a lot of nuance.

And I actually don’t disagree in a general sense, though I might argue some particulars.

not much of a fan of homogenized country pop..thankfully there's Chris Stapleton with the best damn country blues voice and songs since Johnny Cash

beer? flying into San Jose Del Cabo, collecitng our surfboards, grab a 4x4 rental, stop by the Pacifico store and pick up four cases, then through the arroyo to La Playa and Tommy MoreBeer's (RIP) casa for ten days of early morning surf runs to the east cape and lure flnging in the evenings from the beach in front of the casa, all accompanied with a cap being popped off yet another cooler Pacifico, best damn beach beer ever
