Getting Boned in Kihei

Jim Allen

Steelhead
This adventure has proven to be quite a challenge. Day 4 was another skunk. Watched a guide with a client fishing off step ladders being skunked as well.
Day 5: I tried another new spot. I ran into a guy fly fishing from shore or waist deep surf. His name was Stephen he was from Europe but lived in Seatte. He said this spot fished awesome yesterday (story of my life). Stephen showed me the Mantus shrimp pattern. He was using. I had three on my box. I beat the shoreline for about an hour and then "BOOM" hookup! It was about a 2lb bonefish. By noon I had two more hookups with LDR's. Success was declaired.
Day 6: I was back at the hot spot at sunrise. Fished until about 11. The skunk was back on.
Don't know if Stephen is a member as he is my witness to my catch. We did exchange contact info as Stephen wants to float the Yak and I almost always have room in my Clackacraft.

Hey Jim, yes I am the witness from the congregation!
It was great to bump into you. Chasing bonefish while challenging seems a little easier than locating Searun Cutts in the Sound.

Skawla time on the Yak coming up... just saying ;-)
Srickaby99; Again I want to thankyou as I credit you with helping me achieve my Bonefish goal. I have put my flyrod away for the remainder of our trip and just plan on enjoying Maui with my beautiful wife. We fly back on Tuesday. Let me know when you would like to float the Yak. Tight lines my friend.

Enjoy the rest of your time on Maui. it was my first time in Hawaii and I loved every minute of it.

Nice work. I’m on a plane Thursday and planning to hit the beach on Sunday

Good luck Phil!! Choke Fishing has some fly fishing supplies if needed. I found sunrise until around noon to be the best time to fish. The last location I posted I found to be the the most productive

I’m off to Oahu, but I agree about timing. Plus, my spot is accessible by kayak and it’s an upwind paddle back to the car. Hoping to get on the board

Good to hear of success on Maui. Always a struggle especially if the waves are not good. Most of the beaches on the south end are better than the west side or the north side. North side has some good beaches but Lots of wind and I won’t go up there where the parks are very sketchy looking areas. Beaches between Lahina and the aquarium are tough, too many surfers hence lots of waves. Thanks for the tip !
