Gear just for Montana trio

Porter2

Legend
Headed to Montana for a few days early next month. Big Hole and other waters… Been amalgamating my gear and this is what I plan on taking.

Dries > Sage LL 389-4 w/ Bauer MSL 1/ Rio InTouch Trout 3WF.
Back up line is Cortland 444 Peach 3WF.

Dry and Dropper > DS2 490-4 w/ Ross Cimarron 2/ Premier Rio Gold 4WF.

Variety of two before.>TFO Pro II 590-4/ Ross Cimarron 3/ Rio Mainstream DT5.
Back up line is Cortland Clear Creek 444 WF5.

Meaty leeches> Sage RPL 790-4 w/ Ross Cimarron 4 and spool/ Rio Mainstream 7 Sink Tip III and SA Steelhead Taper 8WF.
Other 7 weight line options include Wulff Ambush WF7. (Might switch that out with SH taper)

Sometimes a get a bit anal about my trips. Not all. Guess just the ones that are more epic in nature. 4-5 days out in nowhere in Big Sky country.

😬

You're covered for rods.

Get your drinking water here for free. It's on the way to the Big Hole.. assuming your coming from I-90. The best water anywhere... Sounds silly, but I am serious , the water is that good.

I would take a 10ft 3wt and a 9ft 6wt.

This post doesn’t help in any way. But that’s what I would do. 🙂

Not sure where you are headed on the Big Hole but be aware that a major portion of the river closes on Sept 30th.

You are correct. The 1st time I took my Son camping back "Home" for a week, he christened it "Holy Water" and insisted we take some back on our return to WA state.

This is totally new to me. So I’m tagging along with a rich mens type club of cast and blast. 2/2 of each. But in this scenario this year of 2023 they have invited a couple of mid income American tag alongs…one being me 😆 . So on the other two days while they’re blasting at flying ufos we are doing our own thing and I will be in very capable hands…. I have fished with the other like me on other waters and he’s an hidden fly shop owner /guide. but unfamiliar with these waters. Beside the point. Here’s the thing….. these people (hate that line) are so stuck up they don’t really tell you what you’re in for. So I was sharing with you mostly moderate fly fishing my gear plan. Max four rods. And I might drop the TFO 5 which is a helluva a rod (very impressed with TFO offering) for my 691 XP. Which in its own right is a great rod. But I use it mostly for exploratory fishing with leeches.

Man I rambling. Maybe I wanted to gloat my gear a bit too.

Sounds like you need to at least bring an Abel nipper to blend in.

setups I bring for a montana trip:

6' 2wt tiny creek rod
8'6 4wt for dries
10' 5wt for dry dropper, indicator nymphing, or big double dries
9' 6wt int line streamer
9' 7wt 20ft+ fast sink tip streamer (SA triple density or airflo streamer max long)

Where is the PNWFF sticker and hat?
