Fitness/Health/Exercise Stuff with Evan

Any thoughts for a 51 year old who can still bounce it?

I am just a little younger than you and I also don't like workouts that are just working out for working out's sake. I do like to play soccer. I seem to get injured at a lower rate than my age-peers. I make it a point to get to the games ~30 minutes early and do a solid warm up and stretching routine. I think that has helped immensely. Take it sorta slow at first as your joints as muscles re-acclimate to the herky jerky movements, stops and starts, fast acceleration etc. that playing ball involves, which is hard to replicate with any workout IMHO. I think after a month or two of that your body acclimates and strengthens considerably and you can start to play the way your brain remembers you should but your body wasn't necessarily up to at first. That's the thing--most of us old dudes can't play the way we know we used to. So take it a little easy at first and work up to pushing it. Invest in good shoes. Hydrate. Stretch and stretch some more.

Well done. This is impressive and motivating.

Motivated by a gallbladder that was "filled with stones", I lost 20+ lbs by dieting. Like you, it has been nothing too crazy. I have just decided to make vegetables the main portion of what is on my dish. I have also reduced (almost illiminated) my refined carbohydrate intake (white flour, potatoes, sugar). It's not that hard and it has made cooking delicous meals a new type of challenge. As a result of reducing carb's my saturated fat intake has dropped as well. Fiber intake has skyrocketted.

The excercise portion is something that I have not been able to get going like you have. That is super impressive.

Did you find that he excercise portion of your lifestyle change aided in the reduction in mid- week beer? I mean if you excercising, you aren't sedentary and having a beer. I am a fairly new empty nester and that post-work timeframe is the period of time I need to change to be more healthy physiclly and mentally.
It certainly helps. We have no kids so it was easy to grab a beer or two and couch rot after work. Since I do most of my midweek runs after work, I pretty much run out of time for drinking. I love beer too much so I was never going to drop it all together but a 6 pack lasts me two weeks now instead of two days.

Magnesium glycinate
Thanks. I have started taking this supplement this week. The amount of pills that I take in the AM has really grown.

Any idea how long it takes before I should feel some results?

A week or so I'd guess you will feel less muscle tension. Magnesium levels in muscle tissue can take time to build up if depleted. Your plan to reduce refined carbohydrates & alcohol in your diet will also really help to boost magnesium levels in your muscle. I take one or two magnesium glycinate tablets before I sleep, then take some zinc after breakfast or lunch.

Thank you
You and I might be the same person...other than the dislike for working out. I just turned 51 this month, I'm an ex-hooper, I have been in a perpetual state of sweatiness since I was born and have dealt with cramping as well. After a long hike my shirt and hat have very distinct salt lines. Taking electrolytes and staying ahead of dehydration has helped me with cramping. I just did 40+ miles on a 5-day backpack hunt in very warm weather and didn't cramp once...first time ever:). I was also taking magnesium glycinate every night on this trip.
