IIRC, the cast was purposely not told what was going to happen in that scene.
Watched Alien for the 1st time in the front row at a midnight matinee with a couple of HS buddies. Blazing up prior wasn't the brightest idea. We were all seriously freaked out and don't think I slept well either.
Another iconic scene is when they discover Ash, the ship's doctor, is an android planted by the company to ensure the alien is delivered to the weapons division.
Great movie that still holds up today.

I love this movie so much, probably have seen it ten times. This is a great scene! For years i had a poster of Costner/Crash Davis in that fabulous jacket he wore in the movie on the wall behind my desk at work. I think it’s Costner’s best movie.
