Favorite Fly Shops

My favorite shop will always be Teds. Mostly for nostalgic reasons, but also because Mike was a really good dude. Plus, Steven would always ask if there was something I was looking for that I wasn't seeing and then go grab a catalog (Hareline for example) and see if he could find it. If he did, he'd throw in the order and then call when it came in. Obviously would rather be able to look the material over in person first, but having that just a few minutes from home before the era of internet shops was pretty awesome.

I was also really impressed with Fly Fish Food in Orem, UT. I stopped by there with the 9 y.o. duaghter this summer and Cheech, the owner, made sure she had a blast in there.... taught her how to have the shop dog do tricks, gave her a free hat and stickers.... Super impressed by the customer service and material selection.

I haven't been there in years and years but Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone used to have some very friendly and helpful staff. Creekside and The Valley Flyfisher in Salem were owned by personal friends so it is hard not to recommend them ... if they still owned the shops. The Valley Flyfisher closed his doors and Creekside sold out to a new owner... I'm not even sure if it is still open.

Shops seem to change owners and some of the ones I used to like a lot were bought out by folks that are not nearly as nice ... so it isn't so easy to point out a good shop when that may no longer be the case.
Yeah, I really like them a lot. Still buy stuff from them when Poppy does not have it. Also liked Waters West a lot. The former owner was a great guy who actually sent me dyes out of his stash. Met the new owners when we were over on the OP a couple of years ago and they were also great people to deal with.

Just about all of them, TBH. Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters is a great shop, and I won a rod in a raffle there once. I'm really liking the new shop in town, The Portland Fly Shop. Jason and team are great. St Peters in Ft Collins is also a great shop - friendly staff and willing to provide helpful info. DA is about the only shop where I've been rubbed the wrong way, as have some of my friends.

Murray's Fly shop in Edinburg, Virginia. Used to be a Pharmacy/Fly shop, Harry was a pharmacist; think it's just a fly shop now. Harry is a legend in those parts.

Cheers

Frontier Anglers, Dillon. I've always been treated nice from those folks.

I was always treated nice when I shopped there. But I tried to shop at many fly shops in the greater Seattle area. I liked to spend my money around. I bought two pontoon boats when I shopped plus a few rods and reels. I fished both gear and fly.(y)(y)

Alaska Fly Fishing Goods, Juneau, AK.
Best fly shop in AK. Brad and Mike have the (THE) best website of pretty much any shop I know of. Resources, DIY info, Area and Season info...and in terms of popular and effective patterns for salmonids, they have a world-class selection.

Avid Angler is probably #1 (closest) with Pacific Fly Fisher a close second (a further drive ;-). I stop into Creekside occasionally too, and Peninsula Fly Fishing in Poulsbo. When I travel I like to visit shops but the only one that stands out enough to mention is Anglers Covey in Colorado Springs. I’m sure there are some fine shops in Montana but I don’t go there.
