Drone crashes

I've dabbled in drones. Most are the photography oriented ones ($1000). The other major category are the racing drones. "First Person View" or FPV. Anyone will have a blast with one of these. You will be wearing goggles that give you a crystal clear picture in 3D from the cockpit of your drone. That drone can fly at amazing speeds with extreme maneuverability ...... Think of parking your car near a stream. Fly that puppy a mile upstream and a mile downstream, from one foot above the water to high above the trees. Anyone that can no longer hike that stretch of water, can now explore it, first hand, in real time, in a way that is simply magical.
I had a front row seat to a demo of one of these last spring, and then aftewards the video as seen through the goggles. Pretty amazing, but not my cup of tea.

Even for those people that don't want to get in to the hobby and often (rightly so) find them annoying,, these little wonders are here to change our world. Think of a rancher surveying his 4,000 acres. Think of the old guy in a wheel chair that launched his drone out his window to see whats going on outside. Think of watching an olympic skier while simultaneously seeing through goggles exactly what they are seeing in real time. Think about an old man sitting on his tailgate watching his son (that is right next to him) land a 20" Brown from a stream one mile away.

We look at the $1000 dollar models in awe of their capability. In reality the true capabilities of "drones" are quite frightening. The military applications, especially with the very, very tiny drones is quite futuristic. Whatever the future brings, IMHO, these easy to use, affordable machines have the potential to enhance the lives of sportsman everywhere.

It wouldn't help me find new water. Even if I did I couldn't get to it as walking even a block is out. I manage to fish places next to a road or a wide spot to park. Get out of my truck and walk about 15' to the water and fish and catch fish. Now a days, just getting out is the drug that I need. But the hot weather is holding me back. I just can't take the sun anymore.

Jim,
Many of us have a problem with the way they are misused . Imagine Herbert the Pervert having one that he uses to peep in your 8 yro daughters window, etc. Doesn't matter it the guy is 14 or 55 , its just asking for negative repercussions directed back at him.

I've seen great youtube videos of drones escorting trains set in some stunning scenery. our roofing service uses them to do inspections without having to climb ladders, making it safer for their emplyees.

I've got no issues with constructive use , but as always the few bad apples spoil it for the law abiding.

Respectfully, wanderingrichard, I must say that..Yea,, absolutely,, these things can be, and are being used, in nefarious ways. "They" have tiny drones that can mimic a bird on the wire outside your window. "They" also have drones as tiny as an insect that can enter anyones living space and record audio and video. The capabilities are far beyond "peeping" into windows,,,,,.. Personally, today, I want to buy a $1000 toy (the DJI FPV) and play with it in the great outdoors. Flying (virtually with goggles) three feet above a trout stream at 60 miles per hour, up to six miles away from your campsite??? Yeah that's worth a thouwy.

There are a lot of willow branches three feet above a trout stream. Is that really possible? 60 mph? How are you not going to wreck, lose a thouwy and then I find the useless hunk later on?

Is there enough control to avoid hitting something or, heaven forbid, someone? I think flying a device that fast and that low someplace with uncontrolled access would be extremely negligent.

Recent pictures of the US Supreme Court building look like it is clad in anti-drone netting:

Is that what that is? Is this becoming common?

On my FB feed this morning there was drone footage of a guide in a driftboat going through some rapids and he said one of his clients had brought a drone along and it gave him some cool footage. But all I could think about was the client in the boat riding through rapids in a driftboat but looking at his phone and drone controls the whole time, not really living in the moment......

Some of these drones will "follow" you during activities like mountain biking, skiing or white water rafting. It's basically the ultimate "selfie".....and very affordable.
