Deer Feeding in Maine

There are a lot, I mean I lot, of blacktail deer in my neighborhood. With the new neighbor next door, that makes three, that I know of, who feed the deer. Fortunately not at the scale of the fellow in Maine, so not that many. Still, I about drove into one in my driveway the other day when it dashed from the yard to right in front of me. The deer around here expect drivers to slow down and watch out for them.

In Montana, had a neighbor feeding deer. My fences constantly tangled up, especially the hot wire. Get home at night, walk fences, untangling it.
Finally contacted game warden.
They were mad at me, finally moved.

We have a number of urban deer in our neighborhood. One of the neighbors does feed them apples and that's fine. Otherwise they have learned to wander from lawn to lawn munching on flowers and other expensive foliage.

They kept eating my wife's flowers until we found a deer repellent from Amazon that actually works. They won't even enter our yard once the repellent is in place.

We'll see mom deer teaching their fawns to move from house to house eating as they go. This has been going on for many generation of blacktail deer. As far as they are concerned, we are all part of their life and times. As long as they don't eat my wife's flowers, I don't mind them at all and consider them neighbors.

I’m curious what repellent you’ve found to work.

I checked and I don't think Amazon still sells the stuff but what we originally purchased is :
Ksqurelnb Deer Repellent

After taking at look at this product, I believe it is the same stuff. They're both based on peppermint and garlic oil.

Desiccated powder mules blood if you can find it.
Yeah this is the only stuff I’ve heard works. Glad Gene found something else to work.

I am not a fan of feeding wild animals (I do have bird feeders), but this is an interesting story and a lot of people seem to like the "cuteness". Deer feeding is legal in Maine during the winter months, but baiting for the purpose of hunting is not.

A buddy of mine here in town has a buck that now is a symmetrical 4 pt (west coast) after several years at his wife’s feeder. Coat and Antlers make him about the most handsome buck I have ever seen. No Hunting Allowed…or you WILL face his wife’s wrath.
