COVID Lockdowns - looking back (fishing related)

Memory lane: @Chadk was the very first person to take me along fishing back in 2007 when I moved back up to the PNW from Florida and took me humpy fishing. To say that I was way out of my element during that time is an understatement. It had been years since I'd even fished ANY river for anything. My 4yrs I spent in FL was the least amount of fishing I did in my life, and the fishing I did do there didn't resemble anything we do up here.

So he got me started back on my groove. You can tell from his pics how much he loves taking others out. I share a similar passion nowadays, so it's super cool to see these types of posts. So wholesome :D

Great stuff- thanks for posting!

The pedal-kayak-lake reading thing... my wife might like that. Hmmmm....

The pic of her reading - she is actually on 'cruise control' with an electric trolling motor while I'm using the pedal drive next to her. But she did prefer the pedal drive. Kinda relaxing to pedal and yet feel like you are getting a little exercise at the same time - like a nice easy bike ride in the country.

Great post and thanks for sharing!

My question might be, are you going back to the busy coaching year round sports or will your family choose more camping, fishing hiking outings? I wonder how many will make a permanent lifestyle change?

Great question. My youngest three are in or about to be in HS now. My twin daughters are freshmen playing varsity basketball and soccer with a real chance at getting some sort of college scholarships for either. My youngest son is right behind them. My wife and I do love the sports and supporting them. I'm officially done with coaching (though kinda helping my youngest son's select bball team for just a few more weeks).

We are pretty much back. But we did all grow to appreciate it more -so any downtime we get, we make it a priority to head out together. They are all excited to get out this spring to some of our favorite spots. I'll find ways to make it happen. I will certainly be getting out more - even if by myself. But will bring my older boys who are all graduated and working locally along with me when I can. They enjoy going out and shooting the guns, hunting, and fishing when we can align our schedules.

One thing I learned as a parent over these years is just to be flexible. Just because I could live year-round in Alaska or something, fishing and hunting nearly every day and not blink at what I'm missing back in the states... well, not everyone feels the same, and that's OK. Flexible is good. The relationships are more important than the specific activities, and the outdoor memories built even if just a weekend here and there are strong and lasting.

Such an awesome thread.

What camera/phone were you using for the photos?

Just my samsung phone
Isn't it amazing how well phones do for photos these days? I miss my big cameras for some stuff (and really should make the effort to haul them out more often). But my phone is always with me and takes solid photos.

What a time to be alive. I'm fairly confident there exists approximately zero photos of me fishing before 2007/2008. My parents may have taken a photo or two with one of those 1990s disposable cameras, but I'm sure the prints are long gone. Love that we can capture so much now

Man ain't that the truth. Sometimes I wonder why I spend the money I do on real cameras and lenses. My Galaxy S21+ takes such amazing pictures and video.

Remember the early days of cell cameras? Lol Every picture looked like it was shot from a hundred yards away, grainy as shit, and basically worthless. Pretty incredible the technology we hold in the palm of our hand these days.

while I agree with the second statement, go look at the "Fish Parts Fish Art" thread (I think it's called) and look at that bull trout closeup I took. That was with a first generation Motorola Droid phone. How that worked, I'll never know. Every other photo it took may as well have been taken with a potato.
