College Football 2023

I think my wife spent around 3,000 for her superbowl ticket when Seattle won.

How much is the current fee to become an owner of a college football franchise these days?

For $3000 plus hotels, meals and airfare, I could have a nicely catered spread...

"The new rules would also create a new subdivision of Division I schools that would be allowed to create its own set of rules for recruiting, transfers, roster size and a wide range of other policies. To be a part of that subdivision, each school would have to put millions of dollars each year into a trust fund for athletes."

Then some of the scholarship money should probably go elsewhere...given how much money the top athletes are getting already, it's not like thay can't pay tuition. If you're getting millions in NIL money, hard to then lobby for more free money to go to the school that is giving you millions to play there...if you are not getting NIL money, then scholarships are fine I guess.

Was briefly considering going to the Sugar Bowl, since I could get student tickets (which are only $5!). But all other costs would make me broke.

I was definitely planning on driving down to the Rose Bowl with my dad since it would have been more affordable. I had bought two tickets before the announcement and have been trying to sell them since.

So, Michigan plays Alabama on Jan. 1. Michigan fan here, and I'm glad to see this is the way things have worked out. This is really a "Put Up Or Shut Up" match-up. Today's odds have Michigan by 2 points; to win straight up: 56% and those make me nervous - Alabama does not need those numbers for motivation.... Whatever the outcome, I'm looking forward to a really good college football game.

Cabezon mentioned TV money. Unfortunately, college football is a big money sport, and one has to wonder how much money played in the
Alabama/FSU decision. Does the large money ($300 million/year) TV deal between ESPN and the SEC is a concern on how some of these things play out.

I think this is 100% the reason the committee had to screw FSU. And yes, they screwed FSU. The TV $$ for Bama and SEC is bigger than FSU and ACC.

FSU is ranked (final) #4 (ahead of 1 loss Bama, Georgia & OSU), undefeated, Power 5 champion and "The Program" with a long history. Was the ACC great this year? No, but they're never that great in football.

It doesn't really matter. This decision still told everyone, especially players, that wins & losses...and rankings don't matter. And by the way...the same players that lots of people criticize for running for the money or a better situation. We have no room to judge what any 18-23 yr old kid does, especially when old dudes in a room say that 13-0 doesn't mean shit and get away with it.

Imagine this pep talk- Ok men. You can work your ass off, be the best teammate in the world, perform at a high (probably higher than expected even) level, survive and advance all season to 13-0 record in a Power 5 conf and guess what? It don't mean shit!! Now let's go out there and kick some ass!

At least there are 3 more wins that will actually mean something. Well, 4 I guess. Hope FSU beats Georgia, but won't be surprised if they play uninspired. Wouldn't that be some crazy shit if they just laid down and caused a national TV disaster? I can guarantee a few of them have sabotage on their mind. Imagine how many likes & clicks that would generate. Haha!

Go DAWGS!!

It will be interesting to see how the FSU - Georgia game plays out. It’s almost as if it was set up to show they made the right choice by excluding FSU if they lose to Georgia. They’ll have their second string QB back. My concern is will some of their stud defensive players opt out. They were 14th in total defense and they can play with anyone. The other concern is how pumped they’ll be after getting screwed. I guess the same could be said for Georgia. After winning two consecutive national championship, the Orange Bowl is likely a major let down.
As @Porter2 said, it’s interesting how they used the QB situation again FSU but didn’t against Ohio State in past selections.
Still mind boggling to me. Even with the new 12 team format next year, some worthy team is likely to get screwed with the new precedents the selection committee set this year.

Sitting out bowl games makes me want to puke
Caleb Williams is going to the league and won’t be in SC’s game
My prediction is he flops at the next level

But he will flop onto a pile of money to cushion his fall - if that happens...

One of FSU’s top receivers just opted out.
Kudos to Nix for playing in the Fiesta Bowl
against Liberty.
He could have easily taken a pass with some of his future being on the line. I don’t think many folks would have been upset had he done so.

Well when is a good time to abandon your mates?
Bowl games only?
What if a team was 1& 6? Time to bail on your boys? BS

I’m not a fan either, but I think you are seeing the future with the last option you listed. It will happen. Too much money involved. Its only a matter of time…..
Dudes already have opted out of the entire season.

Speaking as a salty 56 year old- If I was on FSU and projected to be drafted... I'm not playing that bowl game. Ain't no way. The committee has all but told me the game means nothing.
Now if I'm in the playoffs and could win a national championship with my brothers?? Then I'm 100% playing no matter the risk.

Now, the 22 yr old me would probably take the high road and do what I'm "supposed to do" because I'm a 22 yr old and "adults", making way more money than me, are telling me to play. I'm telling you...in the day of NIL and all that has happened, the committee just screwed up so bad man. This will have consequences. Maybe not this year, but like @Stonedfish said, down the road. Some weird, undefeated conference team like Liberty will miss the playoffs because of this precedent. The committee knows best evidently.

The Pirate knew this committee thing was a bad idea.

They played that yesterday on the radio.
God damn, that was some classic Mike Leach. He is correct! That was right up there with his talk about fat little girlfriends. 😂

if coaches aren't loyal, why should players? Coach sits in the parents living room, tells them how he was going to give their son his best opportunity, and the next season bails to another college with most of his staff for a bigger paycheck, and suddenly that same kid is now wondering who his new coach will be, and if he'll fit into their play schematics. Unless of course the coach talked him into jumping to the new school with him via the transfer portal.
Team loyalty? With 20% of football scholarship, 2400 student athletes, entering the portal in the past 12 months? Nope, now more of a reflection of the NFL...their your teammates until they aren't.

If the bowls want these top players to participate in bowl activities, they may need to cut them an NIL check. I'm sure that the players would be happy to meet some sponsors or whomever in return for a fat check. The players may even make more than their first NFL contract. And the bowls could pay for injury insurance. Most aspects of the real world aren't a charity...
