College Football 2023

American LOVE playoffs (to the point where the regular season is a long, cruel joke - see NBA, NHL). But other sports crown their champions based on their overall record over an entire season. For example, in the European football = soccer leagues (e.g., Premier League, La Liga, Bundaliga) the title is decided by overall record. In those leagues, every team plays every other team twice: home and away. The winner of the league cup is the team that has the best overall record. That does limit the size of your league. The soccer = football leagues spice up the title race (best teams) with the race to the bottom too. The bottom 2-3 teams are relegated to a lower league and the top 2-3 teams in the lower league are promoted to a higher league - billionaire American owners (and fans) aren't going to vote for a relegation / promotion system...
I loved it when the PAC-112 was small enough that every team played every other team in the league, especially in basketball - home and away; the team with the best record was the champion.

I see where you’re coming from. I’d love to see relegation in the NFL, which I guess would have a necessary corollary of there being a non-collegiate second tier league. I’m pretty attached to playoffs because I like the mayhem or at least possibility thereof. But why not throw in relegation too! The NFL owner class is generally a cabal if hyper-rich corporate goblins, make them sweat!

Cabezon mentioned TV money. Unfortunately, college football is a big money sport, and one has to wonder how much money played in the
Alabama/FSU decision. Does the large money ($300 million/year) TV deal between ESPN and the SEC is a concern on how some of these things play out.

Curt

Good point, as I’m sure money was factored in. ESPN loves the SEC. That is their crown jewel now when it comes to college football since they lost the Big 10 deal. I hope someday they lose the SEC broadcast rights as well and not to someone like Fox.
Between Fox, ESPN and the inept presidents and chancellors, you can also thank them for the demise of the PAC 12.

11-1 starting QB Kyle McCord of Ohio State and 10-2 starting QB Dillion Gabriel of Oklahoma have hit the transfer portal.

Guessing they are not leaving to go to a winning program here, must be after a bigger paycheck.

Maybe one paid in bitcoin.
🤣

Could you imagine trying to build a program right now?
What a coaching nightmare unless of course you have a wealthy fan base

It definitely isn’t just recruit kids and develop them over 4-5 years any longer.
Aidan Chiles from Oregon State just hit the portal. He showed a lot of promise.

With the Huskies having the need for a QB next year, it looks like they may be in play for Will Rogers from Mississippi St. He is number two in all time passing yardage in the SEC. He was hurt this year but had two monster years playing under Mike Leach. He’d be basically a rent a player, one and done. Dillon Johnson also came from Miss St last year and that has worked out well.

I agree that those QB moves to the Portal are just signaling that the auctions for their services are now open... Between NIL deals and the relaxed transfer rules, a college athlete has far more flexibility to go for the cash than a pro player whose mobility is restricted by the draft until they reach free-agency.
Steve

How long till 10 million a year is the going rate for a top QB ?
Right now, the Sanders kid gets 4.1 million, and Arch Manning gets 2.8 million to ride the bench in Texas...neither of whom are anywhere close to being a top QB right now.
The competition for talent in conferences where football is a religion should drive the cost over 10 million by 2025 at the latest I would guess.
Probably some NIL contracts will be more lucrative for the kids than being Brock Purdy...so 6th and maybe 7th year Seniors will become more common.
😅

Up 150% for the year. Only a fool would say no to that deal!!!!

Free Beer until Iowa Buckeyes scored. What could go wrong?

Their offense was brutal all year, to the point their interim AD fired the OC, who happens to be the son of the head coach. With their defense, they would have been a scary team had they had a decent offense.
Their QB is listed 6’3”, 258 but looked at least 275 against Michigan. Likely not a running threat.

Times reporting cheapest ticket for Sugar Bowl is $436.00 - $524.00…..Depending on source you go thru. One way non stop flight rates start at $999.00. You’re gonna drop $3500.00 easily on a 2-3 day bowl get away and if they win you can do it the following week which I’m sure will be at a 20% surcharge. 😃. They probably have some tickets reserved and discounted for students but 😳

Given that the golf bays were packed, I suspect they didn't actually lose money. What's the wholesale cost on a keg of Miller? And even if it cost them $500, the amount of press and advertising they've gotten from this story was worth many times what they paid.

I'd say it worked out well for them.

Gee, that almost makes the ticket and airfare cost of the PAC 12 championship game in Las Vegas seem reasonable. I had a wild hair idea a couple weeks ago about taking my son-in-law to that game as a Christmas gift. Neither he nor I are worth that much cost! So TV it was and certainly will be for the Sugar Bowl as well. I look around and can't help but wonder, who in the hell spends that kind of money to attend a football game.

Considering you could go on a decent fishing trip and still see the game for similar $$$
Go Huskies (not something I utter very often but they deserve it)

Try going to a Super Bowl...I've been to two, one of which I paid for...
