College Football 2023

Lots of tickets available for the last Apple Cup. Attend history!

I'm sure that all of these 'scholar-athletes' will be better served by 'better funded' schools.

They won't be better funded, of that you can be sure. They will be further in debt, and to be brutally honest, some will have to withdraw from their conference(s) because the TV ratings and attendance will not meet the 'media partners' standards. This new paradigm, much like the last one, will collapse under its own weight eventually.

... and so it goes ...

Such a sad day. I am going out to fish tomorrow.

But having a banner day of fishing does not make up for a day of losing 100 years of history. No more Apple Cup or Rose Bowl. Guess it is time to join the polar bear club.

The TV market thing makes the money...the ad revenue alone will make the broadcasters a healthy chunk of change.
Stanford and Cal bring the Bay area market, (#8) but evidently the ratings are not there for the games or the Big 10 would have taken them also, with the strong encouragement of their 'media partners' of course.
;)
The Cougs are a small market, yet ranked 5th in the PAC-12 in TV viewers last season. Not sure how that translates to TV revenue though…

My earliest memory of college football was Warren Moon playing QB at UW and have been following ever since. I was a bigger "fan" before I went to school there than I have been since. I had a lot less life worries than than I do now. I still have negative memories of those damn "A funny thing happened on the way to the Rose Bowl" WSU t-shirts. I still follow a few teams closely and in general watch college football when I can. It's probably my second favorite thing about fall. That said, I'm just not overly worried or concerned about the changes I see in college football because 1) change is always inevitable, 2) I can't do anything about it, and 3) it just isn't a big impact in my life at this point, with enough other stuff closer to home that is much more important like family matters, steelhead tanking up and down the coast, and a new construction project. Much of life revolves around revenue and a few select individuals lobbying for their cause that results in a thicker wallet...football and fishing are no exception, and just about everything else in life. So while I'll miss the .684 winning percentage that UW holds over WSU, along with the history, rivalry and entertainment, its still just a game and I'll still continue to watch football as long as its around even though I don't necessarily like or agree with the politics, bureaucracy, and system as a whole.

Best team in the Pac 4...
Go Coogs !!!!

This isn't necessary true. I mean, it might be. But it's also possible to have those games on the schedule every year in this weird new conference world if the schools wanted to.
Sure, they can continue to schedule the games. The problem is that the cougs and beavs won't be able to stay competitive with diminished resources. Ten years from now these matchups will look more like early season FBS vs FCS games.

Without a conference like the PAC 12 or equivalent I’m afraid the Cougs will suffer horribly
It’s already difficult to stay competitive but now I think the level of talent will nose dive.
Dark days

The college football transfer portal is going to get very busy...

The amount if debt that needs to be serviced by these big time football schools is huge...
An Apple TV media deal wasn't going to pay for it, not even close. If you look up the athletic program debt for Pac 'usedtobe12' schools you will see they are up to their asses in debt, with interest only payments for some schools approaching 20 million a year. Cal has a mortgage on their new stadium/ facilities that runs to 2100 something, Huskies are at 20 plus million a year in debt service. The other schools, the same for the most part.
The smaller schools are screwed, as will be some of the mid sized schools, even the blue chip schools are just a sanction or two away from being dropped by the TV folks, and unable to pay their debt service.
😅😆😅

Its not bigtime college football, its bigtime network media/ debt servicing.

You can expect layoffs at OSU and WSU athletic depts if they end up going to the Mountain West. Smith’s salary at OSU pays more than each school gets with the media deal in the Mountain West.

I’m not even really a football fan and I’m pissed about this PAC disintegration. So much history just gone in an instant. Weak.
