Not sure what is used on the beach. I'm fishing in the Columbia and I'm using black/blue/purple bunny jigs on half ounce jigheads. My jigging rod is a Light power, Medium action Shimano Trevala.
 
I missed the beach part. The few guys I have overheard that fish beaches mentioned Buzzbombs.

Rotators or buzz bombs with a mini hoochie under it is super popular if throwing lead on the beaches.
Contrasting colors work well, like a chartreuse rotator with a pink mini hoochie.

Thought people were using jigs off the beaches. Bought a couple in chartreuse and maybe will give one a try.
Already have buz bombs and rotators set up.

Some might, but it all my years I think I’ve only seen one guy tossing jigs, and that was under a bobber. He was absolutely killing the humpies with that setup.
People though catch beach salmon on all kinds of crazy stuff though. I have no doubt a jig will work.

I usually just bring my 7wt for salmon off the beaches now but I’ll bring a gear rod and throw out a rotator a couple times a season.

But one thing I had intended on trying over the years was throwing bass poppers or a chatterbait for coho. I’ve never seen this done though, but I’d bet it works due to how much commotion in the water both lures cause.

Casting and retrieving a cut plug herring a few feet behind a sinker (like a small banana weight) is an unconventional method I’ve seen.

When you do that, please report your findings. That would be a hell of a fun way to catch coho. 👍

Can confirm bulls will eat a swung chatterbait.

I remember a guy who fished bass topwater lures for landlocked atlantics and browns in a tributary to Lake Champlain. He claimed to catch fish regularly.

At the time,I did not have the confidence to fish on the top with by fly gear. Looking back, maybe I missed a great opportunity.
