Climate change impact on cold water fishing (not good)

I don't think we will ever solve the problem of declining fish populations unless we look at real causes to go after. Is it really "climate change" the big boogie man? Yes we have the heat blob in the PNW a significant climate event but the fish are really under attack from all sides. We have hatchery fish supposedly to support wild fish but instead they harm wild populations. Hatchery fish harm wild steelhead populations by competing for resources, interbreeding and diluting genetic diversity, and exhibiting lower survival rates in the wild. Research shows that hatchery practices often lead to significant declines in the fitness and reproductive success of wild steelhead. We got tire dust killing salmon. Micro rubber tire dust 6PPD-quinone formed from tire wear, is highly toxic to salmon, especially coho salmon, leading to significant mortality rates when they are exposed to contaminated water. We have the negative effects of supposedly "sustainable aquafarmning" Aquafarming should be illegal as it pollutes the local environment and escapement damages the ecosystem. Aquafarming escapement significantly harm wild salmon populations by introducing non-native species that compete for resources, as well as through interbreeding, which reduces genetic diversity and adaptability. Additionally, farmed salmon can transmit diseases and parasites to wild salmon, further threatening their survival. Aquafarming can lead to pollution in local environments primarily through nutrient discharge and harmful algal blooms. Waste from fish farms can negatively impact water quality and local ecosystems. If you are going to eat a fish everyone knows wild salmon is healthy and farmed salmon just isn't.
 
Underlying issue for our declining fish population is really simple - exploding human population growth.

There are, no doubt, many causes that are responsible for the decline in cold-water fisheries that were listed earlier in this thread. Nevertheless, the point the of the OP's article indicates that Climate Change poses destruction on a much larger scale. Climate change is also interrelated to many other causes of decline in cold water fish species. To fully understand the impact of climate change on cold water fisheries, consider the following points:
  1. Rising water temperatures can lead to habitat loss for cold-water species.
  2. Altered precipitation patterns affect river flows and spawning grounds.
  3. Increased frequency of extreme weather events disrupt fish populations.
  4. Ocean acidification impacts the health of aquatic ecosystems.
  5. Changes in food availability can affect fish growth and reproduction.
  6. Invasive species may thrive in warmer waters, outcompeting native fish.
 
Over the last 10,000 years or so our local salmonid populations had developed into diverse and resilient populations with inherent productivities that allowed individual populations to adapt rather quickly to changing environmental conditions. Unfortunately, over the last 150 years the human growth and the pressures we placed on the environment of those salmonid populations has overwhelmed them. Their critical environments have changed so quickly in so many different ways those populations have lost so much of their diversity, resiliency and inherent productivity that in most cases it is no longer possible for the various populations to adapt quickly enough to those new conditions to survive long term. Certainly, at levels that would support desired fishing impacts levels.

I firmly believe that if recovering any significant portion of those population's diversity, resiliency, and productivity it is critical that an open and honest assessment population by population is needed of the largest production bottleneck for each. Once those big limiters are known they need to be addressed even though they are often the most difficult (costly) rather than nibbling around the edges on less important limiting factors. And yes, that likely means that there are now populations that are no longer recoverable.

Without an approach somewhat similar to that above the motto of salmonid recovery of extinction is not an option becomes extinction is the option!

Wow, using a Britta super filter and my coffee cups are ceramic or stainless steel. The 2 times that I have been in the hospital/physical rehab this year, I noticed they use a lot of plastic for sanitary purposes.
