A big land slide has formed a natural dam on the Chilcotin River (British Columbia) today. I wouldn't make any plans for recreation downstream as a big flood could happen when the natural dam is breeched.

Mother Nature at work.

And it was only a few years ago that a slide partially blocked the mainstem Fraser, obstructing salmon migration. This slide will affect fewer fish, but damn! Mother Nature is sure making things tough for fish!

I have been following this with much interest. I feel bad for the sockeye returning there this year as this will certainly have an impact. But usually nature has a way of bouncing back if we can get out of the way.

I have been wanting to make a trip to Chilko Lake with my BIL for many years...he spent time there as a kid and we keep talking about him reliving old memories and me making new ones. One of these days...but this may likely cause us to re-adjust our timeline again.

Heard it (water) has reached the top. Now they wait to see if it slow flows or bursts.

Cracks me up about the fate of the salmon comments by First Nation people. Yet, events like this have been going on for centuries and actually are good for the ecosystem, in replenishing the land, streams, and beaches (at the ocean). And the First Nation’s spokesman should know this.

I hope the hydraulic pressures are enough to flatten out that gradient over the outwash event, otherwise the Chilko lake component of the Fraser sockeye run is gonna be missing a parent year.

"We need wild stock," Alphonse said. "We have always eaten wild salmon, wild moose and wild deer. We are dependent on wild stock salmon. When you live at the poverty line you can't afford to buy food from the health food store."

Yah, hilarious. How ignorant of him.
