Central Oregon

The girl and I headed out Friday to attend day 2 of the Fairwell Festival in Redmond. She got to see and meet her favorite singer/crush, Waylon Wyatt, and I tolerated both the crowd and the music. I even enjoyed some of it! Win-win!

We camped the first two nights on the crooked river. We didn’t fish it very heavily as the festival was the main goal. The girl managed a nice rainbow, and I got to see a rattlesnake which I was much more excited about than she was …..

KITTY!!!

We headed out to East Lake on Sunday and stayed until Tuesday morning. It was really discouraging. The water level is lower than I’ve ever seen it. Why is this? I’ve heard the fissure between East and Paulina grew and East is draining in to Paulina faster, but I’m not sure how true it was.

Part of the East problem was probably the weather, but neither of us managed a trout. The girl managed to catch the biggest chub however, so she had bragging rights there. I love East lake, but I just can’t get over how different it was, and how poorly it fished.

Diamond Lake was better. We didn’t hit it super hard because we spent Wednesday at Crater Lake, but I managed to get in to a few good fish, therefore, @mcswny , out fishing the daughter! We both got in to some fish at Crater Lake though, that was really fun

All in all, great trip, mediocre fishing!

Look at you, growing as an angler.

I fished East in June and the water level was actually much higher than the previous two years. Thanks for the report, I might veer towards Paulina next visit even though I much prefer the topography of East for fly fishing.

I went to the same festival with my wife and her parents, hope you had a good time! Pretty solid lineup I thought.

Country definitely isn’t my genre of choice, but a lot of this stuff was actually really good! I do wish I got to see Dwight Yoakam

Cool trip!
Was that a boat rental?
Always curious about places that rent small boats
Thanks

Most of the lake resorts in Central Oregon have boat rentals(small to large).

No, it's my ancient Alumaweld driftboat. Diamond lake does rent boats though, I'm not sure of the cost

Just missed you. I fished East Tuesday-Thursday. Tuesday was a battle, didn’t land my first fish until after 11:30! But then I put together a pretty good bite. Mostly Kokanee, but did manage a few rainbows and one 20” brown which ended up being the biggest fish of the trip. The Kokanee were fun, and many were 14”. I ended the day with about 20 fish to hand.

Wednesday was even tougher, I moved around quite a bit and managed a couple of bites here and there, but never really put anything together, I only managed about a dozen, but I did miss 16 takes in a row, so maybe that could have helped, those could have been chubs though.

Thursday I got up early and managed 1 nice bow on a calibaetis dry before the bite died as quickly as it manifested. I worked all day for 10 fish.

It did not sound like people did well overall, so don’t blame yourself.

that's so rad!
