Good day at the local ditch

A couple black necked stilts above, we saw quite a few on our walk. Ruddy ducks, pie billed grebes with tiny ones in tow, ridiculous numbers of great blue herons, an egret, plenty of harriers, a couple lazuli buntings, purple martins, bald eagles…the 4 bitterns were probably the highlight for me.

Bumped into this guy yesterday on a hike with my wife up near the Sauk river.

I’ve seen a lot of them over the years but when we rounded a blind corner on the trail and there he was coming our way at a pretty good clip at only 35’ it was a little closer than I’d prefer.

I’m surprised it didn’t hear us or smell us as we weren’t being particularly quiet, and there was a healthy breeze at our backs blowing directly towards it. It climbed that tree really fast when he did see us, so maybe he’s a little more educated now.

We backed off a ways and after about five minutes it slowly climbed back down and disappeared into the brush.
