Looks like a hybrid to me but awesome catch nonetheless. That lake also hosts Gerrard rainbows which get massive so wouldn't be surprised.

Nice fish.

Did I read that right though.1st run took out 150 yards of line? A 27 inch trout? Am I misunderstanding or missing something?

Likely a typo….150”.

While impressive, that fish is bait compared to some of the kamloops rainbows that I've seen come out of Pend Oreille.

It made me question my decision to run 50+ offshore for albacore and pay that much $$ when I can get 150 yard runs from big lake westslopes :).
Giving the fish and angler the benefit of doubt, if the run was 500 feet in 15 minutes, that’s a run of about 0.38 mph.

So maybe don’t cancel the tuna trips just yet if you want to actually be able to perceive the line going out.

At about 6 inches per minute, a screaming run like that wouldn't be noticed after a few beers.

It's like an Oregon 20...

Not actually 20.

:)

I've had 25+" wild rainbows in AK take 150 feet out (all of the fly line and into the backing)...but 150 yards?...

One of my points of reference as well but I have not had even one of those take me into backing that I recall.

Regardless great fish and sorry @Stonedfish for the thread drift. Cool knowing those fish are out there and would be great to know if folks are targeting with fly rods. Maybe during spawning runs. I used to have lots of fun chasing lake run rainbows often when I lived in CO. Not on their redds of course!

He was probably fishing 300 ft back, rod went off, looked at his line counter and saw 450. That's a 150yd run! The fish just wasn't there for the first 2/3

Agreed...it definitely doesn't match up with my experience. I put 100yds of backing on each of my reels and even with fish up to 29" I've never gotten down to the bone on my backing. Maybe down to about 30 yds left on the biggest fish with nearly the whole fly line out when it hit (70yd run). Also it doesn't take 15-20 minutes for a big fish to make a big run like that...typically it would only be seconds once they know they are hooked. If they make huge runs they will typically be gassed after one or two of them and usually don't last long. The ones that take forever are the fish that go down and try to hug the bottom, but those usually don't take a ton of line and if they do it's slow and you can chase them down if your not alone in a row boat.

All that said, it's an amazing fish.

Friggin tank!
Yeah, they fish WAY behind the boat on those types of lakes. They mention taping the length, but don't say if he kept it or not. And no mention of weight.
The way he's holding it and the fact they taped it right out of the net and no mention of weight...do we think he let it go? I kinda think he did! I mean, Idaho Fish & Game would probably accept a pic right? Super cool if he let it go.
