Catching a unicorn & DFL late report

At the end of April, I returned to a fairly well-known hike in lake in Grant county that I haven’t been to in a while. It was only my third visit to this lake ever and has been 17 years since my last visit. It hasn’t changed at all the past 17 years. Most of you will probably recognize this lake from the pictures.

I have heard that both Browns and I believe Tigers are stocked in the lake and the Browns can grow to be nice sized. It was unknown to me however since I all have caught in the past was Rainbow trout, until this trip.

Beautiful day and the fish were in a cooperative mood, caught about a dozen of these nice 13 inch fish, which were healthy and fought pretty decent for their size, weather was damn near perfect and I was sharing the lake with just one other fly fisherman.

The olive leech pattern with a red bead head I initially put on was working just fine and that is what I caught all of my fish on so far. I was pretty content to this point but I wanted to switch up and decided to switch to a larger streamer pattern to see if it would catch either some bigger rainbows or entice some of the rumored Browns or Tigers that are in the lake.

Well I confirmed that the lake did indeed had said Browns in it with this little guy, caught just a few minutes after I switched to the streamer.

After I released that Brown, I made a cast up against the cattails and almost instantly it gets hit and this second fish had some weight to it. Once it jumped, it confirmed that I had one of those rumored large Brown on my line. After a lengthy fight were this big Brown was just trying to bull dog me into the weeds and the challenge of trying to get it into my too small net, I landed this beautiful fish.

I released this treasure and it kicked away back down into the deepths. I feel fortune to catch this fish since it was in the middle of the afternoon on a bright and sunny day, unusual time for a Brown of that size to be present. So sticking with streamer, big flies = big fish, the next fish I caught was a nice 18 inch Rainbow.

Kept the streamer on for the remaining of the day and it did help me catch the bigger sized Rainbows. Once again content, I hiked out as the sun was starting to set knowing that I will be cooking dinner and setting up a tent by lantern and headlight, but so worth it.

The next day, I get up early and make the drive to DFL. Day 1 was OK – caught a few nice fish but they were not easy. But the quality of these fish at DFL has me returning often. Love this lake, it can be challenging but those large, super healthy Rainbows at the end of the line make it worth it. Next morning I fished DFL for a few hours before I had to head home. Big old skunk for me, but I left with a smile on my face as the overall trip was a huge success.

Congrats on the excellent outing! Scenic setting, good weather, nice fish and almost no one else there. What more could one ask for? Good for you for doing that tough hike in and out of the lake!

Grew up not terribly far from there. Been a long time since my last trip into that spot. Had some great days there.

Great, great, great report! Thank you and I’d say you are crushing it!

I appreciate all of the positive comments - Thanks everyone.

Question - Obviously the first lake in my report has Browns in it, does anyone know if it is also stocked with Tiger Trout as well? Just curious.

Good to see you post on here Peach! I'll be heading to Oregon a couple times next month.
Hey Bakerite - Been here all this time, I guess I just don't post as much as I used to :).

BTW - I fished your former Oregon home reservoir earlier in April. Caught a ton of trout but only one over 12 inches. Water level was super low, probably will go dry this year.

I’ve caught at least one there in the past, but I can’t remember how long ago that was. Less than ten years. It was about 12 or 13”. I saw a pic of a Goliath a couple years before that.

It used to awesome catching rainbows, browns and tigers! That was a long time ago. Same with Lenice, Bobby and Merry…..sad I can say the good old days gone already..

Your good old days, were not as good as my good old days.

That is the problem. Every generation doesn't realize what slipped away in previous generations.

I quit fishing Lenice 30 years ago when in my estimation the fishing had gone down hill and I was waiting on a rehab that still has not happened 30 years later. The other lake I might fish next year. I got tired of the rattlesnakes on the trail. That one might be as good as the good old days.

I had a chance to look it up and confirm that WDFW has continued to include stocking Tiger Trout fry in their plan for that lake over the last few years.

In the last two pictures I thought "Oh my, how did he get that pontoon boat back up the trail let alone down it". - I had to do a double-back to your first pictures before I realized you had two boats on your trip, nicely done!! I'm fishing that lake vicariously through posts like yours.

Ha - That is funny. The first lake I did use my Wilderness Lite Float Tube to make that hike down. Love that tube, I have used it often on any hike in lake. It has had a lot of positive reviews on this forum and I agree with them. So lite and easy to deal with.

Used my standard Outcast Fish Cat Panther Fishing Pontoon Boat at DFL, which I also love as well. Best Pontoon boat for Stillwater IMHO - low profile which really helps in the W and it scoots across the water pretty effectively when I get on the oars to get from point A to point B. Having four separate chambers gives me a little more peace of mind for safety in case I spring a leak.

Nice work - I've caught a bunch of mid-sized bows and a couple of the slightly bigger (but under 18") browns in the lake the last 2 years on streamers and buggers of various sizes. I haven't caught any of the lunker browns, but I know they are out there.

I saw some folks dragged up-and-down a hard-hulled plastic/rubber open kayak thing into the lake on my last visit. Ya'll overstate the approach difficulties.

Yes it has both.

Newton's Law helps with the approach, old age and working against gravity on the departure might not be overstated ;-)
