So far no monster plants at the nearest lake to me…only a bunch of 1 pounders.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot to get your kid or grandkid connected with one of these?

We'll have to go find out now that fall ball is over. Any fall planting usually doesn't show in the list for several weeks if at all.

My son lives in Oak Harbor and one year we fished Cranberry in a driving rain. Caught some jumbos and it was fun. Pretty much had the lake to ourselves.
The first or second time I went there, trying for some fall fatties, the flyers from Whidbey were doing some sort of training where they’d come in low from the east, turn south while over the lake, angle up at about 45 degrees, and Get On It!

Holy Crap it was loud! I didn’t know if I should drop the rod to plug my ears or shit myself😜.

Once I remembered I had ear plugs in the truck it was all good. And, surprisingly, the fish didn’t seem to be bothered whatsoever.

Had the lake to myself that day 😁

One pounders are considered big nowadays Mike……regular stockers around here are 2.5 or so to make a pound? About the same size I used to use for plug cutting herring for salmon! I used to keep a trout once in awhile for my mom, not for me. C&R barbless flies….more for the powerbaiter’s limits/freezers.

The fish are used to it. Our son is in the Navy Reserves and works as a civilian contractor on the NAS. My wife has a sweatshirt that says “I love jet noise.” They are loud when they are practicing. One time we were driving from the ferry to our house and they were doing touch and gos on the auxiliary airfield near Coupeville. We stopped and watched the show.

Hmmm.... I'm sure not everyone agrees, but I'd much prefer seeing a few more steelhead fisheries funded than an opportunity to sit on a lake in freezing rain to catch zombie trout on Black Friday. Some folks will enjoy that opportunity (and more power to 'em!), but I suspect the majority of the fish planted will die over the winter, never having had a cast made in their direction. Being "jumbos," those fish are probably more costly to produce than steelhead or salmon smolts.

WDFW is more and more about stillwater these days. I enjoy fishing lakes in the spring/summer, but I'd much rather fish moving water for the true "jumbos" the rest of the year.

I know where I will NOT be fishing...

Being a lake guy I wish this was the case in my neck of the woods!😁

Years ago I chased those jumbos. They put a bend in your rod and almost always come up sideways. Lame compared to a 10" rainbow on moving water.

The below is all in jest…😆

Since this is the “Lakes” section and I fish lakes a lot, I feel the need to defend lakes.

On the west side your 10” rainbow in moving water is probably a Steelhead smolt and probably should be left alone.

To reiterate, the above is just flipping you good nature ribbing.

Paul (apparently the defender of jumbo hatchery trout 😅).

Behind you 100% Paul! Lakes are my favorite form of flyfishing….try using lighter line rods to match your quarry, way more fun. But if you really want some fun in lakes….fish light bamboo!!
