Hello , Im new hear& Live in Northern California & just retired & bought me a nice Outcast Clearwater float boat, Im pretty expierienced & been all over the Western US but am Interested if there is any quality Flyfishing in the Bend / Cascade Lakes area in the Fall….early October, for quality 2-4# trout…Rick

Well an early good morning Rick and welcome aboard the board.

October is a great time in Central Oregon. Quality 4 lbers is what we are all looking for, but they can be tough to find. Any of the big Cascade Lakes are a possibility and each creates different challenges and opportunites. Pick a couple you like and go after 'em.

But I’m always grateful for quality 2-3# trout too

I spend a lot of time in Sunriver and really enjoy the lakes down there in Sept-Oct. I've learned those trout like a black foam beetle dry, and although the callibaetis hatches are slowing by then after being the major hatch July - August, they'll often still take a callibaetis emerger well through September and into early October. I fish the emerger as a dropper off the beetle and have found the fish switch preferences over a half hour or hour's time, for reasons only they know. The lakes down there are fun to fish, IMO, and very beautiful. The area has some moving water options too for a nice variety. When you're in the area give me a shout sometime and if I'm hanging out down there I'd be happy to wet a line together. I won't promise 4# fish, but the odds are not bad we'd tie into a couple or a few. Tight lines, Ron

Where exactly are you located in Northern California? I suspect you might be leaving fish to find fish. Will send you a PM.

Sounds like a beautiful area, I’ve only been to Southern Oregon…Brookings , Gold beach, .Medford / Grants pass area

for trophies in early Oct Crane Prarie and Paulina are high on the list. Whereas the fish size at CP has diminished over the year, still some two footers on tap, and Paulina offers up the occasional double digit brown to flyfishers in fall before end of season. And don't neglect the lakes once you cross the border and head north on #97...Klamath and Agency Lakes are trophy fisheries with some very large fish on tap.

Good grief. The Fall is normally the best time (it can change from year to year) to fish Crane, Lava, Little Lava, Hosmer, Wick, Gold, East and Davis (if there's any water).
