In post #1230 there is a second one hiding in the upper corner of the door. It stayed in the vicinity of the one on the screen for quite a while. The one on the screen has been a guest for three weeks now.

I saw lots of deer today while out fishing.
Six to be exact and all on the road. Fortunately none attacked my vehicles grill and they are all still out roaming around.

A bobcat walked through the same spot exactly one minute before this little buck did, so I guess they must be buddies.

Hadn't seen the mantis eat in a day or two, but a bit after starting the Blackstone I noticed it was eating an earwig.
The moth put up a fluttering struggle but the mantis finally pinned it and went to work
After eating the head and removing the wings it went to work on the body.

The wife got us up last night and said the mantis was doing something weird. Turns out it was final molt time. Check out the wing buds.

It went very well we think, thanks. Rotator cuff. Got held up by the Elensburg fire for 2hr. Monday on the way over, then after the block wouldn't let his lung work so we stayed an extra night at UW Medicine. Quite the adventure.

Bandtail Pigeon. Arriving en masse, a flock of 20-30 bandtail pigeons migrates into my neighborhood in late spring each year, a clear sign of the change of seasons. The local birds would have overwintered in Central and Southern California. A local attractor for this flock is the cracked corn that my neighbor puts out daily to feed the local deer herd. These birds nest of the large limbs of the Douglas firs. The males coo in the trees. Bandtail pigeons are relatively shy; they have a tendency to perch in locations that have obscured sight lines from my office window. The flock occasionally comes down to feed on our compost pile which is behind some understory shrubs (and not in clear view).
This bird wandered from the flock and I managed to capture a few pictures before it exploded into flight and rejoined the rest of the flock. They are quite striking birds.
I expect that this bird and the rest of the flock will leave any day now as summer winds down.
