Backyard Wildlife

You think both that fox and bobcat have "scent marked" that wood round?

Fungi is technically wildlife, and found these "early morels" (verpa bohemica) a stones throw from my yard this morning. A bit early for true morels though. Maybe in a week or three. BTW, I also found a false morel (toxic) so be careful out there if picking spring mushrooms.

I split one for ID. Note the cottony stuff inside the stem (stipe), and cap attached to the very top of the stem are confirmation keys to Verpa bohemica.

Getting back into mushroom foraging after many years, and have been learning a lot on this Washington based YT channel:

Look what the cat dragged in this week. It appeared uninjured so spent the night in a cardboard box with some towels and a few grass and dandelion clippings. Someone who knows about this stuff better took over the next day. Hope it pulls through and makes it out ok. Death by cat is not pleasant for these guys.

Awwww! So cute! When I was a kid I had a baby woodchuck and a baby rabbit for a few days that my cat brought in. I memorized the book Pets from Fields and Streams.

My backyard is a thruway, restaurant, and rest stop for the local deer population. Several does and their almost-yearlings are the most common. Some of the youngsters look a bit ratty, as they are molting their winter coats into summer coats.

This morning, two bucks wandered past my window and started feeding. They have just started to regrow their antlers. One has just velvet-covered bumps.

The other has developed its first tine.

I expect that the first fawns will appear in the next few weeks.

I have been anticipating their appearance any day now, but the first fawns (twins and the doe) just wandered by my office window. Just like folks say that puppies will grow into their paws, these fawns will grow into their long legs.

Our does are still plump, but no fawns yet. Look at the one further back. That little one is jabbing her side pretty bad. Soon....

Our kittie brings home bunnies too. Once they leave the warren, they are pretty much on their own. I have a nice area, with plenty of food that I release them. Then there are the owls, hawks and coyotes. All part of the cycle.
