Backyard Wildlife

Not my backyard, but it’s on the trails behind the Airbnb we’re staying at in Rhode Island so I figure it counts.

These old stone walls are everywhere in the woods in what used to be the farms of early settlers here. We watched this eastern Whitetail doe stare at us for a few minutes and she occasionally would glance a little to her right, so I thought she may have had a fawn hidden in the brush. As soon as I took the picture, another doe popped up out of its bed from right behind that stone wall and off they ran through the woods.

Well, I have been disappointed the does haven't been bringing their fawns around. I saw two with their mom a couple weeks ago but they fled before I could wake my kids to have a look.

This morning while heading to work, this doe and her twins were hanging out beside the shop. I was able to roll down the window and snap a couple bad pics.

By now we normally have several pairs of geese with babies. Same applies to ducks. This year ---> none.

We have a couple of otters this year. Could that be the reason?

My neighbor has a nesting pair of Cooper’s hawks in their cedar tree. I have a good vantage point from my backyard garden area and every day this one can be seen perched on the same branch and doing its squeaky calls. The crows were harassing them often when they first claimed the territory but have since chilled out.

I know that eagles like to poach crow and raven nests for food, and likely that Cooper's hawks do also.

I have 104 in the shade. Br'er Squirrel has adopted the convection lawn cooling approach (I watered heavy last night).
