Awesome Dogs of PNW

Me too Tom. She's a doll. πŸ™

All right, I guess she's growing on me....

thought I broke the trust with the pup yesterday…..was all stoked to hit the river before it blew out and didn’t think much about the Winter Storm Warning since temps were forecast to be sufficiently above freezing.

Things were going great…did our usual feeder stream or side channel crossing and she was having a good time chasing geese and sniffing out some creekside cuisineIMG_8349.png

then it started drizzling…no biggie…it’s drizzled before. Then it rained a little harder…still not a problem…been here before, too.

Long story (kinda) short, the weather see-sawed between decent and not before not won out.

4 or so hours into it, I finally started catching a clue…the river was coming up and the pup was soaked, curled up like a husky in a Jack London story.

The water crossing going out was concerning for both of us and I could see it in her eyes.

She was shivering in the truck so I covered her with my sweater and coat and cranked up the heat for the drive home.

Today she’s no worse for wear…chasing bunnies as usualπŸ‘

…..sure opened my eyes tho. I’m guessing a dog can get hypothermia like us….anything you floaters or duck hunters do to protect you pups? Aside from not being a knucklehead?

We field trialed Labs and Goldens for about 20 years. I have some experience around this.

Like us, it's the wind on the wet that is the worst problem.

Many duck dogs do suffer hypothermia every year; some owners believe a retriever is somehow genetically immune. They are not. They do have coats that help, and based on your posted picture, it may be true that your dog doesn't have a repellent coat. Regardless, a wet dog in the wind loses body heat.

Neoprene "vests" do help some, and I likely would get one if I had dogs with softer coats as it appears your dog does.

The thing to remember, that you hinted at, is they trust us. We need to be sure that trust isn't misplaced.

Edit to say: You did everything right, back at the truck.

Pups, like humans, shiver when cold (at least at the start), first sign of shivering, I pack it in.

Glad she's OK.

Thanks guys.

Honestly, prior to yesterday I WAS thinking she was somehow genetically immune since she was born into a feral existence, is a husky/malamute-ish dog, and prefers the cold.

I’ll have to look into the neoprenes.

…or maybe something like this

For dogs with a double coat like Malamutes, it is more the wet that affects them, matting down their coat, displacing the trapped air that helps keep them warm. Dry, they can withstand the cold awfully well.

Louie was our kids first baby and grew up at our house when they lived with us to save for their own. He always raced the boys to the door for some love when I got to their house. He fell asleep last night.
