As the weather starts to improve, who is daydreaming about fishing‽

Okay, let's be clear, I've lived in the PNW my entire life and I'm well aware of our multiple false spring/summer phases. Just because the sun is out this week doesn't mean we don't have inches of rain ahead before the nice weather takes hold.

That said. about this time each year our wet and dismal season starts to fade out. Here's a 100+ comment thread about "early signs of spring" that we've all been posting to. The days are longer and slowly getting warmer. Reports begin trickle in about bass waking up for prespawn (@Billy is already hawg farming over on the east side of the hills). Bull trout are starting to chase chum fry in BC. Early Eastern WA lakes are open and the statewide lake opener is just a few weeks away. Trout stocking is in full swing.

Especially as the winter moving water options have dwindled in my area, this is about the time I really start to get excited for fishing each year. Like I'm coming out of my fishing hibernation and looking around for something to fill my stomach. Well, not literally, I suppose. I'm not interested in eating stocker trout, but you get the point.

And just in case you're too jaded and salty to feel the stoke quite this early, I've got a sure-fire way to fix that. Talk to a fishing obsessed 8-14 year old. A buddy of mine stopped by last week to pick up a bow mount trolling motor I was selling. He had his son with him, and let me tell you, that kid is OBSESSED with fishing. What should have been a 15 minute small talk conversation before dinner turned into over an hour of standing in my garage getting grilled about local spots, seeing hero fish photos, and listening to his adventure stories. And I legitimately enjoyed every minute, his excitement was unavoidably contagious.

He's got a little fishing YouTube channel if anyone wants to check it out (and yes, I made sure his dad didn't mind it being posted here). No flyfishing on there (yet), but I know his dad tosses loops from time to time and lurks around here as well.

GLORIOUS FISHING DAYS WILL BE HERE SOON, LFG!!!

Time to switch from night dreams to daydreaming...

Thanks to my knee injury I'm using the Sept. 1 tuna trip and November Mag Bay trip as my rehab/healing motivational carrots. I'm not sure there will be much in between now and Sept. 1 but we'll see. I would love some bonus summer SRC but I'm not going to push it.
Gotta be some way to get you a fish or two before then. I mean, my bass boat has old-man comfy casting seats I can set up for gimpy injured folks...

I had a long and detailed dream the other night about losing a giant largemouth to a river-style logjam. Now, that water and logjam was also somehow in the gym of my kids' school and the bell was ringing for class. Not sure what was up with that.

Dreams are weird.

Yeah staring out the window a lot, I've got Spring Fever pretty bad, but life circumstances have not allowed much fishing lately. I ordered a bunch of old first person Alaska/Arctic canoe journey books and have been devouring those in my free minutes. I keep thinking about multi-day canoe journeys, something I've never done. My father in law has threatened to give us his never-used-a-whole-lot 17' 1988(?) Key West fiberglass center console if we (pay someone to) tow it up from Georgia but stuff happening with them over there is delaying that whole deal, but if so, my Spring and Summer fishing could be pretty different from past seasons. We shall see.

I am absolutely daydreaming about fishing! And I am more than a little envious of the folks here who are retired. I love my job, I am good at it, and it is rewarding in more than one way. But it leaves me very little time for recreation.

When I lived in Vermont, my short commute took me across a great trout river. I would often stop for an hour or two on my way home in the evening to fish the evening rise. I miss that a lot--going fishing (aside from "my" put and take lake) takes more commitment and planning here.

With the boys sports starting last week, watching them the last four/five days while mom and dad did a little trip, and setting up classes for next quarter I didn't get to fish over spring break. Tomorrow's last day of break and I'm heading an hour East to fish! Probably stockers, maybe more. Don't know if I'll sleep and dream a lot or not, kinda excited.

Um, I’m still dreaming of one more good day skiing. So far, the forecast for Thursday is looking promising at WP. I have already been fishing a couple of times and planning trips, but early spring mountain weather is messing up those plans.

Hmm intriguing! I’ll have to see how the healing process goes.

Make sure the transom and stringers aren’t rotted out before accepting and towing from Georgia!

I won’t be inspecting it, if it makes the trip, until after it’s here. Just have to trust him not wanting to pointlessly leave his daughter’s family out on a limb. Which I do.

As a young boy, I learned from my grandfather that "anticipation" is a huge component regarding the enjoyment of sport fishing.
This can not be understated.
Today I got my Bass rod out. Fiddled around with my "tackle" and "anticipated" the upcoming, inevitable battles with five pound bass at my local lake.
I was no where near any lakes, or any fish, but the "anticipation" caused my pleasure sensor synapses in my brain to induce joy.
Daydreaming about fish, while tying flies or fiddling with gear, IMHO, is a big part of the fun.

I've hit Samish twice in the last two weeks for kokanee with nary a sniff.
Fished it in January for bass and caught this 18" cutthroat in 35 feet of water right on the bottom on a half ounce jig and twin tailed grub.1000009447.jpg
Heading to Lake Roosevelt April 19 for 4 days targeting kokanee, rainbow trout and walleye. Definitely getting stoked for that trip.

I went fishing today, only for a few hours but it was nice to get out! A stocked year round lake.. pictures in another thread! Nothing was caught by either of us, but it is always worth it!

I had planned to go to the upper Yakima, but decided I didn't feel like driving over the pass.. even though I did want a corn dog up at the ski area!

I used to daydream about fishing all winter...then I realized there are some fisheries that produce very well all winter long if you can stand the cold weather or just pick and choose your days. It is nice when you have a sunny day like yesterday though. I need to start packing the sunscreen. Fish were well fed.

My spring fishing stoke is taking longer than usual to get going. Possibly just due to very busy life lately and the stress that comes with it - which is ironically even more reason to just get out. Been using long runs as my therapy for now until I wait for the fishing to get good enough to motivate me to pull my things together.

I'll get there eventually, just need to get my head in the right place first.

So stoked!

I plan to learn how to jig steamers with a mono rig. I descended deep into a fly box reorg effort last month that I think sets me up better. Also considering a new float tube - do not have one at present.

I even bought myself a new surfboard & fly rod carrier (aka car). Full time 4wd. Several road trips being evaluated.
