Area 9 Opener

There are people like Ira, Mtskibym and Jasmilo who are so fishy it's a reminder of how unfair life could be :)

Speaking of tanker waves I got hosed really well today, not once but twice. Think it was the 2.5hrs of sleep that clouded my judgement and reaction time, got water inside wader before I could get a cast out. That made it super uncomfortable for the rest of the morning.
Second incident really put serious water inside, my legs look like the Michelin man. I had to go lay down on a log and put my legs up to drain the water out :)

Encountered many near keeper sized fish but today was not my day:)
Well my tanker fall caused me to get a small water tight container, too which I places towel, dry shirt, and pants for my next tanker ride to the beach.

Got all my “how to cope with waves” training trying to fish beaches on Maui in September. They never stop there except for a very short time a first light in the morning on few select beaches.

Well, that was fun.

I stepped in next to @mtskibum16 on a beach early and one cast poached a nice keeper, I met @jasmillo for the first time, was loud enough with my laugh for @Kfish to recognize me, worked an inside rip where I caught 5 fish in 3 casts, broke the tip on my beloved FethaStyx 8wt Switch on one of those doubles, broke it down to the new top eye and kept fishing, cast off that section and hooked my last keeper!

It was nice to finally meet you in person @Irafly! That first fish you caught was indeed a hog.

I myself am stuck in wild fish land. I’ve landed a number of fish the last two days and all of them have had fins. Boo!

@Kfish that first set of waves was sneaky because the tanker came by in the dark and was out of site before you got to the water. Not sure what happened with that second set though. I thought maybe you were testing to see if your waterproof back pack would work as a PFD in a pinch :).

It did help a little actually!
Damn... It was a long way back to shore and with that trough in between I had no choice but to take it in the back like a man haha

Your lucky I forgot to seal off my waterproof back pack so it filled up with water and acted like an anchor. Note to self seal the dam thing next time. Glad you also made it out okay👍

Those big freighter waves will reach up and send ya straight to Davy Jones's locker. Or is it now Herring Dan's locker?

Dan always waded far too deep and he was not a real tall man. I talked to the guy that grabbed Dan as he was heading out to the freighter lane, said if he would have miss his grab Dan would have been crab bait.
there is a MA 9 beach that I have fished a few time without much luck I’ll add. If You want a real wake try being in the water when a Nuk sub cruses by, those baby’s really push a lot of water. I should have though something was going on when I sad a boat with armed men ahead of the sub.

That set of waves that got @Kfish the second time were massive! At least a couple feet above your head when they broke over your back. I was watching in case we needed to execute a rescue mission.

Pretty sure it was @Stonedfish and @DimeBrite there once on the north side when we had to pull a drunk dude out. First wave took him down. He was just getting up on his hands and knees when the second flattened him again and he started drifting out. They can be no joke in places even when you’re not hammered before noon.

Besides freighter waves, you also have to keep an eye out for the incoming tide filling in behind you in certain spots if you wade out far. It can be easy to get complacent when in you are in knee deep water without realizing the troughs behind you are much deeper then where you are standing.
I’ve had this happen a couple times and glad I left when I did. One time I didn’t realize it was happening but luckily a guy yelled at me to get the hell out of there.
I remember @Dryflylarry had a pretty scary experience with this a few years ago.

This morning another set of huge waves hit the same beach. Some of this biggest I have seen there. The odd thing this time is that I have no idea where they came from. I asked the guy next to me if a tanker went by that I missed somehow and he said he did not see one. He thought maybe a sub riding mostly below surface could have done it? Earlier in the morning @Bagman mentioned seeing some giant waves from a sub one time so maybe?

As far as fishing. 2-6 on adult sized fish today and surprise surprise, both landed were finned. My last 11 keeper sized fish landed have been “wild” :). Guys around me have caught clipped fish. Just an unlucky stretch. Not complaining. I’m fishing and the sunrises have been fantastic the last couple of days!

I decided to take it easy and slept in til 5am and fished a "local" Seattle side beach today.
Bait and shakers around but no signs of salmon, there was this big seal that keeps rising/diving and slapping his rear pretty hard on the water.

Well well well.. What's this? A destroyer or frigate out trying to get Lou? Not today ship! not today!

Wilds again? :) that's the universe's way of balancing out fish karma for you have bagged too many already from your recent AK trip.

Maybe you’re right. The fish gods are pissed because I went flossing like a plebeian for half a day.

No fresh coho for your dinner plate sir!!

That was me next to you today. Those were some sneaky big waves and they definitely came out of nowhere. A few surfables in there. If someone wasn’t agile they might have gone into the drink. I left shortly after you so nothing else to report after you left. Nice to meet you, see you out there next time.

Another early morning on the beach today. Lost a few including a nice one while the stars were still bright. Kept one 4 ish pounder and released a few similar sized unclipped fish. Overall a little slower than yesterday and not as quite as many shakers but still plenty to keep my fly away from bigger prospects.
