One beer. 17-18 reels. I only use the lube you see. Below is one of the most challenging and fun reels I have used for salmon. In a good way… makes me more focused in fighting the fish. It also sucks at times 😜. Bauer MZ so much easier. I have too much gear. Why????? Oh I’m a gear whore. I can’t take myself to the 12 step rods and reel elimination program. If I successfully completed that program I still would have 6-7 fly rods and fly reels…. And for fly fishing only. 😬image.jpgI forgot the question. How often do you service your reels?

I do mine each winter, already done. I do about about a dozen +. Still using a lifetime supply of Penn reel lube and grease. I seem to be fishing them often enough I've just been giving the lines a wash and putting them back on the last couple years, not storing them. We'll see how it works in the long run. It takes a bit of time, one drink seems low, I go through a couple espressos.
 
One reel and whenever I can remember to. Usually once or twice a season and I just use a tube of Pedro's that I have for my bikes. Reel is an old Battenkill Disc and the ratchet gear wore out last year, Orvis sent me the NOS part for 8 bucks and good as new.

Most people who service reels and small geared equipment use way too much grease. Servicing a reel is something people do way too much and think about way to much. I personally only work on a reel if I see dip in performance, or it just doesn’t feel right.

To be fair, when I say "service" it's more of a pull the spool off, and clean it up. Most reels there's not much you can and should do in terms of service (at least modern reels).
 
Meowsa!! Just tried that and have it in my shop!! I'm more concerned that I don't see any whisk(e)y.. do I need to head over this evening? Haha!!
 
I had no idea that there was a Sage model of the OG Danielsson (via Loop). Love my Danielsson Original's! I use them for all of my freshwater needs.

What do you do differently with the 4 different types of lube?
 
Dear Porter,

I'm pretty sure I hate you. I have previously seen photos of your fishing gear closet, with reels, reel boxes, rods, etc. all neat and tidy and organized. Why are you trying to make my gear closet, store room, garage, and garage attic (the places where I store my fishing gear) look so bad? What have I done to cause you to do this? I can't possibly answer your question of how often I service my reels. I can't even find all my reels. And I don't service the reels that I haven't used in recent years. And the reels that are in use get serviced when I think they need it or when it becomes clearly obvious that they need it. Like last fall when one of my Ross Colorado reels had the spool seize up on the spindle. It flat out just wouldn't turn. I had to completely disassemble the reel and lubricate it as I reassembled it. That was weird, but it works perfectly fine again now. So I will test all the gear I intend to use in the coming season in order to avoid failure in the field. I may create a spreadsheet to list all, or most, of my equipment and service records. I think I need a personal fishing gear assistant, kind of like a ghillie. Thanks Porter, for reminding me why I hate guys like you with all your tidy organized fishing gear . . .

Actually just two types...I just keep the three tubes of Reel X together, (came with Bauer reels). I don't lube any of my Lamsons, I use the Hot Sauce on my click/pawl reels if they need it. Most of this is just a spin and visual check, I use my Bauer M3 a lot so it gets a drop or two. I have a couple dedicated SW reels and mostly the go over is for them....so why not go through them all. And tonight I will wash all my rods in warm water with soap, rinse, air dry and finish them off with a quality furniture polishing!!! 🤓🤪

I only have 6 reels, I only use three of them in the summer time. These are used in fresh water only. No salt water in Montana. As much as I have fished in the last two years, which is next to nothing. I don't bother to clean and grease them up any more. But because I'm lazy and old I just don't care any more. And I hate windows 11.
