An exercise in futility.

Blind optimism and over confidence got the best of me yesterday. Not in a dangerous way, just in regards to what happens when you're desperate to fish. With the weather and a sick kid, we've been stuck in the house more or less for the last week and I needed to get out, so I checked the gauge and the river was high but coming down, and it was at a level that I fished and still did fairly well (even though it was still up 2-3' from the last time I fished here 2 weeks ago). What I didn't account for was that it was colored like chocolate milk with MAYBE 1' of visibility. Assuming it was all of the melted ice and snow melting from the lower elevation. Regardless I tried to fish, albeit, half heartedly and walked away with my first AND last skunking of 2022. All things considered, one skunking for the year is pretty good ;).

I took some neat photos, drove a lot, and sorted through a lot of things in my head that I need to work on (mentally). Here's to picking up and moving forward in 2023. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've never met any of you (for the most part), but I'm glad to be here and am really, really happy to have this place.

Took a good nap here.

It was a bit windier than expected so I left the 4wt in the car and rigged up the 8.5' 5wt glass rod.

Man…I have done that more than once. If I decide I need to get out I don’t give an F what the conditions are or the prospects of success...I’m going! There can’t be many of us because I never see other people on those days🤣.

I mean, I kinda WANNA feel bad for you. But I'd steal from an orphanage for a year with only one skunking in all my fishing trips.

(no, I wouldn't really. But you see my point...)

Good work getting out. Tough to fight the Shack Nasties this time of year. But it's a worthy battle.

To be fair, I’m not a steelheader ;)

Ha, yeah, the only people I saw on the river looked like they were setting up for NYE festivities.

looks like a touch of color in that water....just a touch. We fished it about a week ago....it had the color but hadn't risen quite that much yet. Our results were similar...

It was money at Mecca on Saturday. Much longer drive for you I think. Wonder where the mud came from.

Pretty sure it was all the lowland ice and snow melting off. it was 55 degrees that day!

Normally it isnt any further, but during the winter I would have to go over Hood so that makes it much longer.
I was down below the falls so im pretty sure it was the White blowing it out. It was a little better above the White but still very low vis.
