American Made Flyrods

Purchasing made in America fishing gear adds more money for fisheries conservation. Dingell - Johnson act

I mean I totally understand wanting to support American made companies and all that, but good grief you gotta draw the line somewhere.

What if the parts are all American sourced but are trucked in by a truck built overseas?

What if the rods were wrapped on a machine that had a bearing made in Japan?

What if the American worker who machined the reel was fueled by a lunch of Chinese food?

A bit of background...every time I buy a foreign made flyrod/flyreel my lovely wife gets a little upset. She tries to buy as many things American made as possible, and she could care less if I spend $1500 on a flyrod. Me...not so much.

I bought a Sage X to mollify her...and it was a huge disappointment.

Tad bit of thread drift, Krusty - I bought a Chevrolet Silverado, it was built in North America but in our neighboring country to the north. My Ram was built in Mexico whereas my Japanese Subaru was "produced" in Indiana.

Yup...vehicle parts and production have been a world endeavor for decades....including so-called American icons like HD.

I think we're pretty much down to Darn Tough socks for complete domestic production!

You have to draw the line somewhere in both directions.

On one hand, a lot of foreign countries are making a decent product these days. I’m not so snobby that I’ll turn up my nose to a foreign made item if it’s good.

With that said, some companies are incredibly greedy and they’ll bring to market a foreign made item and price it nearly the same as a high end domestic item… perfect example is stone glacier and their sleeping bags/quilts. You can get a Feather Friends/Western Mountaineering/Enlightened Equipment like item for nearly the same price… and in the quilts case the domestic item is actually cheaper.

At the end of the day, I try to support domestic production as much as I can with whatever I buy… but it doesn’t always work out.
