When you're after the big game violent fish species you need that razor point curving into the hook eye to survive the rollicking fight.

That might be most of it, there are a lot of hooks on the market and you have to do something to make them sell.

However, the logic behind that curved point is to minimize the angle between the direction of pull from the hook eye to the tip of the point, so that it sticks into the fish better in the first moment of contact. I used to bend the point inwards on big siwash hooks and it seemed to help stick more fish.
