a non-political climate change thread

We have the individual ability to do more. Drive less walk a bit more.be a pre-cycler. Consider the difference between need vs want. Continue to feed the economy with your money selectively. Drink more water while we have it. Plant trees. Pray for rain. Learn to tread water. Just darkly joshing a bit. We have to collectively do something. Small gestures that are environmentally inspired can have an exponential effect. We drive the economy and our dollars set the direction.

Jojo I've read your posts over the years, and am genuinely curious as to what input you may have in this discussion. I'm hopeful that you do not view me as a "usual suspect".
(I don’t recognize your name but if you say years you must have been on the old forum.) I actually made that comment before yours just hadn’t hit SEND yet.

I just don’t understand how folks have to derail threads and get into pissing matches and call each other out on topics that to me we should all be concerned about and most possible agree on in very many areas. (Though i do want to research your comments about how Gore was wrong on all counts, because i am interested in what he really predicted would happen and where we stand now.)

But like Covid or January 6, where i naively thought we could discuss our fears and share facts, there are folks who will not allow for that and it becomes necessary for moderators to slap on the lock.

I look to these threads to gather information (@SurfnFish has posted some good stuff here) to learn more, outside from what i read, so i do appreciate when the moderators leave them open.

Agree with this:
I would like to thank the Mods for allowing this thread to go as far as it did. Few posters have read information from other posts or at least tried to debate with something other than spew that has already been proven incorrect.

Over one million people died because we politicized C19. How many have and will suffer because we can't reach a common goal to save our planet because of political BS?

There is nothing grey about solar maximus! It exists and has existed as long as the solar system and warms the Earth as the orb gets closer to the sun and cools as it drifts further away. The cycle has been confirmed repeatedly in the geological record along with the warming and cooling periods that correspond with the cycle.

What is grey about that?

Dave

Oh yes @Jim in Anacortes , you asked for my input. Ha, it is very very basic. (And yes, i know these are more tongue in cheek).

1. No income tax breaks for more than two dependents per household.
2. Provide birth control for free to everyone.
3. Income tax breaks for married couples who choose not to have children and adopt instead.
4. McMansion houses must include solar energy provisions or pay taxes if they house more than 500-700 square feet per person living in the house.
5. Bring down the prices on vehicles that are better for the environment not make them more expensive.
6. Find a way to quit watering golf courses and make it still ok to golf.
7. Teach students better about climate and have them contribute to doing any small thing to help the planet as a requirement for graduation.
8. Shut down Facebook, Twitter, and other social media where bad information is so easily shared.
9. Shut down all 24 hours news channels and go back to just the 6 o’clock news, with the kind of anchorperson we had in Walter Cronkite.
10. Fact checkers on every newspaper.
11. Fines for journalists who share fake facts.

Haha. I’ll probably think of some more.

I liken the discussions and debate about climate change to the discussions and debate about environmental quality following Earth Day in 1970. Damn, wouldn't ya' know, all those prophets of doom and gloom turned out to be overly optimistic.

That's a whole lotta authoritarianism in that list, oh and more to come!

Would you be as quick to defend, say a 'non-political' flat earth thread? Or would you be in there calling them fools? Trying to change their misguided views. Why not just let them talk about flat earth and not try and derail the thread...

12. Members on forums use ignore buttons more often when they disagree.

13. Have HG type channels make brown grass seem a beautiful norm for landscaping. They have so much influence on what consumers want for their homes.

14. Drink more wine than water.

I am predisposed to having particular opinions about this topic as is everyone else. If one does not say yes to the question that climate is changing- what can be discussed? As an organic gardener for 40 or so years I have seen and reacted to a 3 weeks slide later in the year, higher temps, much milder winters and falls.

It's an interesting theory but far more complicated.

The best way to detect changes in the output of the sun — versus changes in the radiation reaching the earth’s surface through clouds, smoke, dust, or pollution — is by taking readings from space.
This is a job for satellites. According to the World Radiation Center, there has been no increase in solar irradiance since at least 1978, when satellite observations began. This means that for the last thirty plus years, while the temperature has been rising the fastest, the sun has not changed.

Thanks for offering some science and not some political crap.

15. Extra taxes for billionaire “astronauts“ (so much for every mile they go into space) unless they spend the equivalent amount of money on doing something the planet really needs. And like @Jim in Anacortes said about celebrities: Charge so much for mile for celebrities using private jets.

16. We need a four party system. Classic Democrat/Classic Republican. And then two more, breaking off from where those two parties have veered.

17. Working from home can work as Covid showed. Get people off the commute and let them work from home.

18. Quit tearing down structures that are not that old and instead renovate.

Of course! I support our Constitution (as amended), so that means tolerating even the free speech that I dislike. Flat earthers should be allowed to expose their foolishness. I wouldn't participate a whole lot, but might ask someone to post just a little bit of clear, cogent, and convincing evidence in support of their belief just in case it included some entertainment value, or unexpectedly, some scientific value. I try to keep an open mind, so I listen to people speaking idiotic occasionally, like the news commentators over at FOX News channel. When I see or hear what seem to be reasonably educated or informed people saying demonstrably stupid shit, I figure they're just doing it for the money, like the "scientists" that defended tobacco smoking or smokestack industries that are upwind only of the low income part of town, etc.

Same, so that's why I'm calling out the speech control crowd.

The problem is just who is going to do this "save the planet." Should we tax ourselves into financial oblivion and make wholesale environmental laws to restrict our industries while other countries, specifically China, goes along its merry path.

Are we going to ban the sale of any product made in China until they get on board?

The root issue here is that while we all share one planet far too many are thinking that the US can just fix this. And that is just not accurate.

Individual gestures matter and add up. If you continually point accusingly away your other fingers point right back at you. That form of projection is counterproductive.
