2026 Gardening Growing Thread

Amish Paste are one of my favorite tomatoes for sauce...good sized, flavorful, not many seeds.

Everything you want in a sauce tomato.

Morning Gary, peel the outer husk off the garlic careful not to expose the raw garlic, I use a smoke tube and do a double smoke on it. It takes about 3-4 hours per smoke cycle
This is a new one to me; great looking garlic and I bet the taste is AMAZING.

It goes really well with smoked cream cheese. The thing about the smoke tube is its a cold smoke and the cream cheese wont melt. I typically smoke cream cheese when I smoke all my cheese in late fall when the temps are not warm. I have noticed that the smoke flavor and color will adhere to the product better in colder weather instead of warmer weather. Just my thoughts and review but to each their own.

Okay you Garden Gurus, question for you. I planted Onion Starts this year for the first time. 1/2 of them have made good bulbs, 1/2 of them have no bulbs. All the plants are about the same size ( about 14 inches in height and all of the plants look to be in good health. How come 1/2 of the starts didnt grow any bulbs/onions to pick?

Thank you in advance.

Bob

Non of my onions did worth a pinch of shi$ this year. I'm going with its my soil in my raised beds because all my neighbors had great onions. Might be worth testing the soil.

Onions that don't bulb up typically for a few different reasons.
Wrong variety ( onions are day length sensitive), and getting the wrong types of sets mixed into an order or bag isn't unheard of
Too much nitrogen causes rampant top growth and limits bulbing. Unequal distribution of fertilizers in usually the cause when some bulb and there don't if this is the issue.
Crowding of plants limits the ability for the bulbs to fully form...so consider that also.

Sometimes if you plant too late,it can also have an effect on the plants.

Other than that, I got nothin'..

Spacing was probably my issue then. I shared that same raised bed with herbs and they all did great.

Could be..
I find planting too late is the most common issue. I see folks planting onions here in May and even June..

IT HAS BEEN DECIDED that you just need to aggressively HIT the plants. It gets em tough for the wonter!!!!! HIT THE PLANTS!!! Should be out there every mornin' hittin' the plabts!! I do that for 45 minutes. Pre- quiet harrs!!!! Hitting the plants and yelling FULL VOLUME. 5:30am Sharp. Hit them so they hit up against neighbors window at 5:30am. And YELL. Garden pros!!!

Well, Its official my gardening 2026 has came to a close. My maters did what they needed to do. I'm done till Spring. I honestly dont care if I see another tomatoe till next summer

I'd roast the tomatoes on the grill with a bunch of garlic and a slice or two of onion at a low temp till the Tom's are squishy and the garlic is golden, low temp, don't burn the garlic.
Then peel the skin off and cut out the core, best done after cooling a bit.

Then put it all in a pan, add olive oil and cook it down a bit till thickened. Transfer to a blender and pureee, then back into the pan where you add fresh basil and cook it on low for a few minutes till basil wilts and things look right.
This is how I made sauce with ours.
It is very good, silky sauce with a ton of flavor.
🙂

Double batch

This is how I do it, add a bit of fresh oregano if you like...the more garlic the better for me, buy everyone's tastes are different. Fresh everything, and good olive oil makes things better..
I freeze in freezer bags, stored flat with all the air pushed out, keeps well for a long time.
