2025 Tuna and Exotics

It's always been a thing. Internet and more people out there is just making it something we hear more about.

VERY true. I'd just like to see become the thing it was when coastal tribes were harpooning bluefin up to 600# in places like Nootka Sound, and as far North as Haida Gwaii (sp?). They absolutely belong in our waters.

This is why I love this community.....

"we keep busting 12wts....anyone got one I can borrow?"

*5 people raise their hand....

"you bet, when should I drop it off?"

"any time works...one last question, do you want your 4pc back to you in 5 or 17 pieces?"

🍻

I have a really stout 12 + one piece rod that is built as a loaner if anyone needs it. I’m bringing it along on Saturday.

Thursday crew had a great day on the water. Too late in the evening to say much more than that but more details may be forthcoming in the next couple of days.

FWIW this was the best performing fly for me today.

Will also note that I'm extremely prone to motion sickness, and one the two trips that I've done so far, I've used a combination of a scopalamine patch that I put on the morning before the trip, and a phenergan (promethazine) chaser the day of the trip (half-tab at 5AM and 11AM) and have managed to make it out and back without any signs of nausea. Almost certainly overkill if you're not super-prone to sea/motion sickness, but has been a game-changer for me.

Notice any side effects?

Yes - but way less unpleasant than motion sickness - at least for me. Dry mouth, a bit of bluriness up close, and harder to empty your bladder.
have u tried the ginger drinks and lozenges ? i found they settled me down - but generally, i have not had issues out on the water on maybe 10 trips.

Last time I went au naturale with regards to seasick meds was on a whale watching trip in NZ ~20 years ago - only because some sort of ginger lozenge was the only thing I could get my hands on.

Long period swells + indoor seat equalled me gritting my teeth and doing the nausea equivalent of Braveheart's last stand for the entire trip. "Hold. Hoooold. HOOOOOOOOOOOOLD!!!!"

I always keep a Reliefband (https://reliefband.com/) watch on my boat for passengers to use. I first found out about it from a work colleague maybe 20 years ago. We did aerial waterfowl surveys together from a small fixed wing airplane and she often would get motion sickness. The watch (she called it the magic watch) worked for her. It has worked for many of my boat passengers as well.

I shall cast my gaze upon you with pity, whilst I cast my proper baitfish fly to the tuna fish.

(Nice "guide fly" btw)

Alrighty then. I'm not completely uncivilized. Just to show my cephalopod fixation isn't absolute, I submit these for your approval. Including one proper, tiny match the hatch imitation.

Edit: Hope we'll get the chance for baitfish vs squid smackdown on Monday. Forecast is looking bumpy. Wind not bad but big 8' swell at 11 seconds.

It's funny, for a while I kind of swore off flash in my tuna flies, after having a sunny calm enough day where I was watching tuna come "drive by" my flashy fly and not eat it, repeatedly, which was frustrating. But I guess I got over that because I've been using more flash again. Just a touch though, for the most part.

Yup, flash/no flash, dark/light colors, thin/full profile, weighted/unweighted, etc.

Fortunately I've managed to avoid going down such drive-by induced rabbits holes.
