NFR 2025 Gardening Growing Thread

Non-fishing related
Yeah overdue starting a new thread. Not much news other than i have dug up all our begonia bulb and put in the greenhouse . Raked swept the balance of leaves . Digging another yard of my compost tomorrow and planning greenhouse starting dates . Still have a lot of parsley and oregano growing and shallots , winter stuff all growing swiftly. Favas and biennial broccoli from Sept planting about 30” tall. Temps very very mild . Lowest temp here so far since winter began is about 38-40 degrees. Garlic is taller than usual for January. Narcissus , and other bulbs on there way. Have made a soil amendment list. Will get it in the ground/ raised beds in the next month- 50 lbs cottonseed meal, 25lbs kelp meal, 12 lbs bonemeal , some worm castings(12. Lg bags) maybe ght grab 30 lbs of alfafa pellets. Happy gardening!

So far between this year and last we've planted 12 fruit trees.
Various apples, peaches ,apricots,and plumbs.

My wife will plant all kinds of veggies.

We also have lots of strawberries, raspberries and a couple thornless blackberries.

Next up is a big deep freezer and a side of beef. Ohh and building a chicken couple for eggs

Maybe next year solar for the house.. working towards living light on the grid.

Hopefully fill the freezer with walleye fillets too.

More than just gardening sorry.

Spent part of a beautiful sunny but cool day working in the garden.

I am beginning to believe we are coming to a time where if you don't fend for yourself you'll go without. I believe it's long past time for Americans myself included not to be dependent upon the government and the supply chain.
My only hope is that I don't also need to learn to defend what I have done.

CHEAPNESS IS IT'S OWN REWARD

I was at a local pet store when I saw that they were throwing out some plexiglass that they used for fishtank covers. I took the pieces home and cobbled together a cloche for one of my raised beds. I used scrap wood which I had on hand, so total cost was zero. It's not the prettiest thing, but it should work. Allegedly, a cover of this type produces an environment which is about 500 miles south of where you live. For me in NH that means DC area weather.

Great find!

Started tomatoes and peppers. The varieties are being cycled through every 3-4 years. I have way too many seeds and need to continue to decrease my obsession. You can read what I am growing this year. I will start other seed in 6 weeks or so- i have snap peas just coming up here in ground.View attachment 145251View attachment 145250
I noticed you've got ~4 of each variety. How many of each will go into your beds?

This will be the first year of starting any seed indoors. I got this cheap all in one start kit and found some space on top of cabinets in my basement. Planning on getting some lettuce and kale starts going this weekend.

I planted started kale last Sept-October and picking soon, also planted biennial purple sprouting broccoloi and hollow crown parsnips and Broad Winsor Fava beans in early September last year all this will bee harvested before my tomatoes get set out. The 3-4 each of the varieties are insurance and expandable because I always plant 3-4 seeds in each 4” cell. If i have multiple starts in 4” pots I will trasplant and lable seedlings for neighborhood sales or gifting. I give my nephew plants and share or sell in my urban neighborhood of Arnada. I grow lettuce in elevated containment . I have made about 20 custom sized screen covers for bed boxes of specific heights. We have a lot of damn squirrels and feral cats have a fully fenced yard

I’ve got a three finger baggie of egg shells I had planned to use on my tomatoes.
But since you know….the price of eggs, I’d be willing to sell these by the gram to forum members.
Thanks for your interest. 😉
